Children & Young people with neurodevelopmental difficulties are a high-risk group whose needs are unfortunately not always understood or met. This important role aims to ensure that children & young people with neurodevelopmental difficulties who experience mental health problems get timely, appropriate evidence-based care and treatment.

The Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service offers treatment for children and young people up to the age of 18 for mild to severe emotional and mental health needs.

Our core purpose is to work with children and young people and their families/carers, who may be experiencing emotional and mental health disorders that have a significant impact on the child's development and cause distress to the child and/or their carers. We aim to improve the mental health of all children and young people with the provision of a timely, integrated, high quality, effective, multi-disciplinary county wide service.

Main duties of the job

This role involves:
  • Supporting the development of training for staff to meet the core capabilities framework for children & young people with neurodevelopmental difficulties.
  • Working alongside the Senior Leadership Team to ensure adequate provisions and adaptations to resources, group and individual interventions.
  • Offering direct specialist intervention for children & young people with neurodevelopmental difficulties and complex mental health needs.
  • Joint working with mental health practitioners to increase the level of knowledge and skill in the wider CAMHS workforce and ensure better outcomes for CYP with neurodevelopmental needs and their families
  • Offering consultation and training

Please note, this role has been expanded from an ASC Specialist post to include other neurodiversities.

Job responsibilities

We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic and innovative individual to work as a Neurodevelopmental Specialist across Community CAMHS. The three locality based Community CAMHS teams support young people and families presenting with mild- severe mental health difficulties across Nottinghamshire.

This role will promote and develop clinical excellence within the Community CAMHS teams to enhance the mental and emotional well-being of children and young people with neurodevelopmental difficulties.

Working as a Neurodevelopmental Specialist, you will:
  • Support the implementation of the core capabilities framework across CAMHS.
  • Working alongside the Senior Leadership Team to ensure adequate provisions and adaptations to resources, group and individual interventions.
  • Offering direct specialist intervention for children & young people with Neurodevelopmental difficulties and complex mental health needs.
  • Work collaboratively alongside mental health practitioners to support the provision of excellent evidence-based care to CYP with Neurodevelopmental difficulties and their families
  • Offering consultation and training to the wider CAMHS workforce to increase the level of knowledge and skill and ensure better outcomes for CYP with Neurodevelopmental difficulties and their families
  • Contribute to comprehensive care planning through partnership working with other agencies such as education and social care to ensure better outcomes.
  • Conduct audits to evaluate quality of care provision and to formulate improvement plans as needed.

You will be required to work closely with the Clinical and Operational Leads for the teams to ensure quality and excellence in service provision.

A key element of the role will be to support the development and sustaining of a positive working culture within the team and the broader service to support clinicians in feeling valued, listened to, supported and provided with clinical learning opportunities.

A working knowledge of risk assessment, safeguarding procedures, experience of working with the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act is essential. Experience of working with young people with Neurodevelopmental difficulties who experience mental health difficulties is essential.

Appropriate professional registered qualification (E.g., RMN, RNLD, Social Worker, Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist) or equivalent and membership of a registered statutory body.

Post-basic qualification in CAMHS or relevant experience is also required for this specialist role.

Candidates should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and good IT skills.

A full UK driving licence and vehicle for business use is required for this post; however reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010.

  • Post basic qualification in Child and Adolescent Mental Health or relevant experience to master's level or equivalent
  • Qualification in teaching/supervision and mentoring of students

Knowledge
Essential
  • Understanding and working knowledge of the CAMHS system.
  • Understanding of attachment, trauma, early developmental issues, learning disability and the similarities and differences to ASC presentations
  • Working knowledge and experience of the provision of therapeutic approaches and interventions with CYP and families with ASC and mental health difficulties
  • Knowledge of other agencies systems e.g. AMH, Social Care
  • Working knowledge and experience of relevant legislation regarding young people.
  • Extensive knowledge of complex mental health difficulties that affect children, young people and the impact on their families/carers and the ability to assess these.
  • Working knowledge and experience of safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Autism Act 2009, Autism Core Capabilities framework, CETR and experience of adopting PERSONAL principles

Desirable
  • Knowledge of the key strategies and policies affecting CAMHS (e.g. Delivering With, Delivering Well, Future in Mind, CYP IAPT, Hear By Right, NHS Long Term Plan etc))
  • Knowledge of how these are located into a wider strategic picture of child health and well-being.

Experience
Essential
  • Extensive experience of working therapeutically at Band 6 (or equivalent/ above) with children and young people with Autism and families within a CAMHS setting using a range of appropriate, evidence based clinical interventions.
  • Extensive experience of working with young people and their families with ASC and a range of mental health problems (e.g. psychotic illness, eating disorders, depressive disorders, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorders)
  • Care co-ordinating care plans.
  • Extensive experience of risk assessment and risk management. To demonstrate ability to carry out highly competent clinical assessments including mental state assessments and risk assessments and develop a formulation of their problems.
  • An ability to apply a crisis management approach to complex clinical situations.
  • Extensive experience of multi agency working including education, health and social care.
  • Experience of providing clinical supervision in relation to complex cases to junior staff and peers.
  • Delivering consultation within CAMHS and other agencies.
  • Experience of audit, research and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrates experience of providing care that is sensitive to the needs of minority groups.
  • An ability to manage and contain the anxiety of other professionals.
  • Extensive experience of involvement: communicating with service users/carers to reflect on and develop services.
  • Demonstration of leadership skills

Desirable
  • Experience working across CAMHS services (e.g. inpatient, community, specialist etc)
  • Experience of supporting families pre and post ASC diagnosis
  • Experience undertaking ASC assessments (e.g. ADOS / ADI)
  • Experience of undertaking sensory assessments

Training
Essential
  • To have undertaken statutory child safeguarding training or be willing to prior to commencement of the post.
  • Further training/qualification in psychological therapies e.g. family therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, group work etc and knowledge of how to adapt these for CYP with ASC

Desirable
  • Sign-off mentor training CPA and/or EHAF training
  • Further or non-statutory child safeguarding children training
  • Further or non-statutory vulnerable adults safeguarding training
