Berkeley House is a seven bedded assessment and treatment service for people with a learning disability, behaviours that may challenge, autism or a co morbid mental health issue.

Berkeley House has a strong focus on multi-disciplinary working, and you will use your specialist skills to assess complex client groups. You will be required to develop highly individualised care plans and provide bespoke training, advice and support to colleagues and carers.

We welcome applications from Speech & Language Therapists who are registered with RCSLT and HCPC and who possess a dysphagia qualification. We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic individual with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills to join our dedicated and skilled team.

There will be close working with colleagues from psychiatry, psychology, nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy and you will be expected to liaise and support clients, and professionals and other agencies.

The successful candidate will have experience of working independently with adults and younger people with a learning disability who present with behaviours that challenge services.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy Service for adults with learning disabilities
  • To provide highly specialised communication assessments and interventions to individuals or groups of service users
  • To provide highly specialised eating and drinking assessments and interventions to individual service users
  • To provide clinical supervision for less experienced Speech and Language Therapists and for Speech and Language Therapy Students
  • To be a lead clinician for SLT input in learning disability inpatient services.
  • To carry out delegated tasks in policy development

Person Specification QUALIFICATIONS Essential
  • Recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy
Desirable
  • Evidence of significant post-graduate training in adult learning disability and autism
LENGTH AND / OR NATURE OF EXPERIENCE Essential
  • Significant experience as a Speech and Language Therapist in adult learning disability
Desirable
  • Experience of working in LD inpatient settings
PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE Essential
  • A sound understanding of national policies and procedures relevant to ALD and autism
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage and prioritise own workload
  • Excellent presentation skills and experience in training staff
Desirable
  • Computer skills - knowledge and experience of symbol software packages
