We are seeking to appointamotivated and forward thinking clinician who can work flexibly andiscommitted to supporting CYP and their families across Hertfordshire and the full PALMS' team. The Positive behaviour, Autism, Learning disability, Mental health Service (PALMS) team is friendly, cohesive and proactive. This post attracts a Recruitment and Retention Premium of £3000 pro rata, to be paid in 3 instalments: £1000 (pro rata) after 6 months (upon completion of successful probationary period) and a further £1000 (pro rata) 6 months after probation; and a final payment of £1000 (pro rata) 6 months after this. Not applicable for internal candidates.
Main duties of the job

The ideal candidate will be:
  • Passionate about combining both clinical and leadership skills and have a desire to contribute to change in a vibrant NHS team
  • Able to make highly skilled evaluations and decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.
  • Able to provide expert clinical support and advice to team members
  • To be able to lead in the coordination and monitoring of various systems within the service
  • Able to formulate risk management plans and be able to support other team members in doing so.
  • Able to provide specialist advice and consultation to clinicians responding to emergencies as part of the Priority Pathway.
  • Able to provide clinical supervision and line management for some members of the team.
  • Able to delegate effectively to peers
  • Able to provide cover for the Service Lead in times of absence
  • Able to maintain a high degree of professionalism when working in settings where there is a highly emotive atmosphere.

About us

PALMS (Positive behaviour, Autism, Learning disability, Mental health Service) works across Hertfordshire providing a specialist multi-disciplinary approach. PALMS is a CAMHS commissioned service which offers individually tailored support for children and young people (CYP), aged 0-18 who have a global learning disability and/or Autistic Spectrum Disorder, helping families to manage challenging behaviour, toileting, feeding and sleeping concerns which have not benefitted from community interventions and/or to support mental health needs which cannot be met with reasonable adjustment by other CAMHS services. Additionally, PALMS also supports problematic sexualised behaviours. Interventions include workshops, groups, individual therapy, and therapeutic work with parents/carers/siblings. PALMS aims to keep children and young people with their families within Hertfordshire thereby improving outcomes for all family members.

Job responsibilities

PALMS principally deliver a flexible service according to need and personalcircumstances, in a planned way. For example, for a full-time worker this equates to flexibly working 37.5 across the working week. PALMS are open to flexible working and therefore part time / job share would be considered, working a minimum of 0.6 WTE.

The post is permanent and will be based in either the East and North or South and West of the county. The role is 0.7 WTE however, PALMS are open to flexible working and therefore part time / job share would be considered, working a minimum of 0.6 WTE.

We have continued to support CYP and their families through the COVID19 pandemic embracing virtual working whilst continuing to offer face to face work where clinically appropriate. Virtual working offers flexibility to both team members and families and is now embedded in the PALMS team.

Training And Qualifications
Essential
  • Degree/Diploma in Nursing supplemented by specialist training to Masters Level Management Qualification or equivalent experience AF, IV
  • Postgraduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology
  • MSc in Systemic Psychotherapy
  • MSc in Child Psychotherapy
  • Post-doctoral or post qualification training in relevant areas of Autism, Learning Disability and mental health
  • Registration with appropriate professional Body

Experience
Essential
  • Significant post qualification experience of working clinically in a mental health and/or learning disability setting for children and young people (CYP) assessing, containing and managing complex cases in a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Experience of communicating effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
  • Experience of taking a lead professionally.
  • Experience of providing clinical supervision.
  • Experience of providing Line Management.
  • Experience of dealing with Safeguarding Incidents.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working
  • Experience of developing and delivering training and/or groups
  • Experience of taking a proactive role in service development
  • Experience of leading on and reporting against Clinical Governance
  • Experience of managing complaints.

Knowledge and Skills
Essential
  • Ability to make judgements involving highly complex facts or situations which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options, which may be conflicting and where expert opinion differs or some information is unavailable.
  • Able to independently plan, organise and prioritise a number of competing demands on an individual and service level.
  • Able to manage highly emotive situations including distress and aggression and communicate complex information in this context
  • Up to date knowledge of policies and procedures and clinical issues relating to specific client group
  • Knowledge of current developments specific to the PALMS remit and professional background.
  • An ability to utilise research evidence and design and implement research activities to inform service development and clinical practice
  • An ability to make autonomous clinical judgements involving highly complex facts and situations
  • Able to establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders, service user groups etc
