An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to work within the Intensive Support Team and Mental Health Inreach within the adult Neuro-developmental Service.
We are looking for individuals who share our strong value based approach and have an understanding of the support needs of people with a Learning Disability and Autism, who are at risk of an acute hospital admission or placement breakdown.
The Intensive Support and Mental Health Inreach Teams are innovative, dynamic and responsive teams providing essential support to people with learning disabilities and Autism within Derby City and South County.
We work intensely for short periods of time with people with a learning disability and Autism to support them at times of crisis and prevent placement breakdown or hospital admission.
Main duties of the job
The Trust is working closely together and in collaboration with the wider Joined Up Care Derbyshire organisations.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a specialist team and contribute to an integrated service development.
The Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist will work within the Intensive Support Team 3 days a week and Mental Health Inreach Team 2 days a week; working closely with managers, community services, multi-agencies, third sector and other key stakeholders, to support individuals who are in crisis or require an intensive community response; aiming to maintain adults with a learning disability and autism to stay within their own home setting where possible.
We promote person centred practice and work creatively to improve people's quality of life.
The work is both community based and in-reach work into hospitals when required.
The teams are working flexibly, and this includes being based in the office and also home working.
The teams work 8am-8pm, Monday-Friday and 9am-5pm, Saturday-Sunday, on a rota basis.
In addition, this will also include an on-call provision which covers 24 hours a day (which is currently telephone advice only).
Our ethos is to work intensively and creatively as an MDT to make a real difference to the lives of Adults with a Learning Disability and Autism.

Person Specification Qualification Essential
- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification
- RCSLT and HCPC registration
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
- Post Reg MSc or equivalent qualifications
- Membership of relevant Special Interest Groups
- Training on effective appraisal
- Evidence of leadership courses/training
- Experience working as an SLT, post-registration with adults with learning disabilities and ASD
- Experience of developing training
- Experience of working with people whose behaviours challenge and supporting people with Mental Health Difficulties
- Experience working in community MDTs and supporting people in crisis
- Experience of leadership and supervision
- Experience of using person-centred thinking/approaches in clinical practice with adults with learning disabilities and ASD
- Experience of developing case management skills in less experienced staff
- Experience of working into mental health wards/ LD assessment and treatment units
- Excellent interpersonal skills - including observation, listening and empathy skills
- Well established knowledge of assessment tools relevant to adults with learning disabilities and ASD
- In-depth knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions used with adults with learning disabilities and or ASD and ability to compare and contrast relative benefits
- Demonstrates excellent analytical and reflection skills and advanced negotiation and problem solving skills
- Demonstrates leadership skills as well as ability to be a good team member
- In depth knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to adults with learning disabilities and ASD
- Evidence of presentations at conferences local, regional, national and/or international
- Advanced clinical supervision skills
- Evidence of published research in peer review journals
