This is an exciting opportunity for qualified Education Mental Health Practitioners (EMHP) to join a school-based service in Surrey. These posts are based in schools and there are various vacancies available across Surrey (i.e. Runnymede, Spelthorne, Elmbridge, and Waverley). We have a large School-Based Needs team covering all 11 boroughs of Surrey which consists of MHSTs, Primary Mental Health Practitioners and Child Wellbeing Practitioners.

Surrey's new Alliance is working to embed the THRIVE framework. The THRIVE Framework thinks about the emotional health and well-being needs of children, young people and families through five different needs-based groupings: Getting Advice and Signposting, Getting Help, Getting More Help, and Getting Risk Support. Emphasis is placed on the prevention and promotion of mental health and well-being across the whole population and the post holder will be expected to work within the ITHRIVE framework with schools, CYP and their families to ensure that they receive the right support at the right time.

The Schools Based need service is currently undergoing an exciting and innovative transformation. We are working closely with schools and partners in the third sector to develop the THRIVE model and provide enhanced support to schools in Surrey.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work within an MHST within the wider School-based Need team delivering, high-quality; brief outcome focused evidence-based CBT interventions for children and young people experiencing mental health difficulties. The post holder will work in schools and in community locations. This post is suitable for someone who is passionate about intervening early to support children, young people and their family who need support with managing their mental health and emotional wellbeing to enable them to thrive.

They will be expected to:

Manage a caseload and offer the provision of mental healthcare services, to young people with mental health difficulties.

Holistic assessment of mental health and wellbeing in children and young people.

Work in partnership with Primary Mental Health Workers, CAMHS, Schools and GPs to liaise and support children and young people.

Offer high quality brief outcome focused evidence-based CBT practice to individuals, workshops and groups.

Key Responsibilities

CLINICAL
  • Assess and deliver outcome focused, evidence-based interventions to children and young people experiencing mental health difficulties.
  • Working in partnership, support children, young people mental health difficulties and their families
  • Work in partnership with children, young people and families in the development of plans for the intervention and agreed outcomes.
  • Support and empower children, young people and families to make informed choices about intervention.
  • Operate at all times from an inclusive values base, which recognises and respects diversity.
  • Accept referrals within agreed national and local protocols.
  • Undertake assessment of risk to self and others.

  • 8. Adhere to the service referral protocols and signpost unsuitable referrals to the relevant service as necessary.

    9. Provide a range of information and support for evidence based psychological treatments. This may include guided self-help. This work may be face-to-face, by telephone or via other media.

    10. Adhere to an agreed activity contract relating to the overall number of children and young people contacts offered, and sessions carried out per week in order to improve timely access and minimise waiting times.

    11. Attend multi-disciplinary meetings relating to referrals or CYP in treatment, where appropriate.

    12. Keep coherent records of all activity in line with service protocols and use these records and outcome data to inform decision making. Complete all requirements relating to data collection.

    13. Assess and integrate issues relating to transitions, education and training/employment into the overall therapeutic process.

    14. Work within a collaborative approach involving a range of relevant others when indicated.

    15. Work in collaboration with children, young people and communities to enhance and widen access.

    16. To provide a service that is equitable and non-discriminatory in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and disability.

    17. Make appropriate referrals to other service providers in the statutory and voluntary sectors and redirect patients to other sources of appropriate support within the local community as required.

    18. Develop a local knowledge of the locality and its services and facilities, particularly in relation to mental health issues.

    19. Educate and involve family members and others in treatment as necessary

    20. Conduct risk assessments, prepare risk management plans and initiate appropriate action where indicated (including requests for mental health act assessments and referrals to relevant secondary care services).

    21. Make decisions on suitability of new referrals, adhering to the departments referral protocols, refer unsuitable clients on to the relevant service or back to the referral agent as necessary

    22. Assess and integrate issues surrounding work and employment into the overall therapy process.

    23. Operate at all times from an inclusive values base which promotes recovery and recognises and respects diversity.

    24. Prepare and present clinical information for all patients on their caseload to clinical case management supervisors within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, in order to ensure safe practice and the clinical governance obligations of the worker, supervisor and service are delivered.

    Clinical Supervision and Training

    1. Engage in and respond to personal development supervision to improve competences and clinical practice.

    2. Prepare and present case load information to supervisors within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, in order to ensure safe practice and the governance obligations of the trainee, supervisor and service are delivered.

    3. Following relevant training, undertake appropriate clinical supervision on a regular basis in accordance with the relevant professional guidelines and policies.

    4. Attend locally organised and national training appropriate to the work role and agreed with line manager.

    5. Proactively take responsibility for attending supervision, case management and line management regularly, participate in objective setting, performance reviews and respond to agreed objectives.

    Professional

    1. Ensure the maintenance of standards of practice according to the employer and any regulating bodies, and keep up-to-date on new recommendations/guidelines set by the relevant departments.

    2. Ensure clear objectives are identified, discussed and reviewed with supervisor and senior colleagues on a regular basis as part of continuing professional development.

    • Ability to work within educational settings to increase mental health awareness within the staff group
    • Ability to make an assessment of risk and to record and communicate it appropriately and to take appropriate action to mitigate or manage risk.
    • Ability to personally manage a sensitive, traumatic and potentially emotionally distressing caseload
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Excellent time management and organisational skills
    • Self-motivated and a team player
    • Good IT skills and able to complete notes in a timely manner
    • Access to a car and be able to travel to meet the requirements of the post
    Experience Essential
    • Experience of working with children and their families in an education setting
    • Experience of managing a caseload and the provision of mental healthcare services, to young people with mental health difficulties.
    • Experience of holistic assessment of mental health in children and young people including assessment of risk.
