An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Substance Misuse Nurse to provide treatment interventions, within Derby DHCFT Children's Breakout service, for young people with substance misuse issues.

The post holder will be part of the 0-19 children's service working within the Public Health Nursing Team element of the provision.

You will have excellent communication skills both verbal and written and the ability to have difficult conversations, using empathy and sensitivity, with young people, often experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties, related to their substance use and other health professionals.

If you are passionate about improving health outcomes for children and young people and have the experience, knowledge and an understanding of the issues impacting on vulnerable young people experiencing substance misuse and related risky behaviours, then we would love to hear from you!

Development opportunities within the service could lead to the completion of the Non Medical Prescribing course in line with Trust career progression.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:
  • Provide treatment interventions within Derby DHCFT Children's Breakout service to young people with substance misuse issues.
  • Undertake comprehensive assessment of the young people's health needs following referral into the service, providing information and advice about drug use, smoking cessation, alcohol use and related issues to include blood borne viruses and safer sex.
  • Plan, assess and deliver individual packages of care and provide clinical oversight of non-registered staff with appropriate delegation.
  • Co-facilitate group work relevant to substance misuse.
  • Work with young people with substance misuse problems (drugs and alcohol) to co-ordinate their care in relation to prescribing and harm reduction within the framework of the harm reduction and prescribing policies.
  • Deliver harm reduction support and interventions working as an autonomous practitioner (including BBV testing, and Hep B vaccinations) and to support prescribing and script management where required.
  • Deliver needle and syringe exchange as required.
  • Provide strong Clinical Leadership in support of the Service Manager.
  • Promote and support young people and carer involvement as autonomy and choice are an integral part of the philosophy of the Trust.

Person Specification Qualifications/Education Essential
  • NMC Registered Mental Health Nurse / General Nurse
  • Educated to Diploma/Degree Level (ie Dip HE Nursing)
  • Motivational Interviewing Accreditation
  • NMP qualification
Experience Essential
  • Demonstrate experience of working with service users with substance misuse and complex mental health and/or physical health needs.
