We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven B6 Pharmacy Technician who is passionate about training and development of the pharmacy workforce and leading on procurement.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a well-established and experienced Pharmacy team at HPFT. We are looking for a confident and assertive candidate with good organisational skills that is willing to develop their leadership skills.

In addition, the post holder will provide medicines optimisation services at ward level, as well as accuracy checking and leadership and management support.

The post holder must have accredited checking pharmacy technician (ACPT) status, accreditation in medicines management, and ideally experience as an educational supervisor. You must also be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the management of procurement and Education & Training for technical staff in Pharmacy services across Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (HPFT) and will be integral in supporting the Chief Pharmacist in delivering the trusts Medicines Optimisation and Pharmacy Strategy

Job description Job responsibilities

Pharmacy Procurement and Distribution
  • To assist Team Manager- Operations on all matters relating to the pricing and purchasing of pharmaceutical products. This includes ensuring that the best price is obtained and that supply arrangements are not compromised.
  • To ensure systems are in place and working optimally to ensure all contract lines from NHS Commercial Medicines Unit (CMU) contract and other approved discount schemes are utilised and maximised.
  • To provide assurance to the Team Manager - Operations that medicines are bought in line with best practice, legal requirements, and professional guidance.
  • To assist with the preparation of clear and effective procedures for movement of pharmaceuticals using the pharmacy stock management system (Ascribe).
  • To ensure the efficient procurement of all pharmaceuticals/ drugs / medical gases and ensure that appropriate polices/ procedures are in place.
  • To ensure that the procurement of medicines meet all legal, professional, organisational requirements.
  • To ensure medicines procured follow the guidance in the Trusts Medicines Formulary, any deviations are investigated and authorised by a senior pharmacist

Education & Training
  • To ensure the training needs of staff are met by co-coordinating/delivering suitable training to enable them to perform their duties safely and confidently.
  • Organise and produce staff training plans, programmes, and materials.
  • To work with the service line leads, to continually review the training programmes within the Trust Pharmacy service, undertaking training needs analysis and identifying requirements for improvements in the training provided.
  • Ensure staff competencies are maintained and that records are up to date.
  • Work in partnership with Dispensary Manager to explore how we can better utilise technical workforce within the department.
  • To organise regular training team meetings and attend departmental meetings to raise any relevant training issues
  • To plan, co-ordinate and deliver induction programmes for all new technical staff, ensuring competencies are achieved and recorded within the first months of employment
  • To undertake all relevant personal training to support this role, demonstrate and maintain commitment to CPD, and be informed of current issues in pharmacy practice. Support staff to be aware of revalidation requirements with the GPhC, and circulate any developments
  • To perform the role of Educational Supervisor, to lead in development of other assessors within the pharmacy department. Allocate assessor responsibilities and workload, provide support and guidance, and review assessment techniques of those involved in the assessment process.

Medicines Management:
  • Work collaboratively with pharmacy colleagues to ensure that the needs of the organisation can be met. This includes participating in patient-facing pharmacy services and dispensary services.
  • Support the medicines management service at ward level including the assessment of patients own drugs, medicines reconciliation, counselling service users on their medicines and dispensing for discharge when required.
  • Undertake duties of a technical nature including the dispensing, checking and supply of medication to individual service users.

Person Specification Qualifications, Education and Training Essential
  • BTEC/NVQ level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent
  • Current registration with GPhC as practicing member
  • Accredited Checking Technician status
  • Accreditation in Medicines Management
  • Evidence of and commitment to continuing professional development
  • Additional areas of training through short courses, eg leadership, management etc
Previous Experience Essential
  • Proven experience working in hospital procurement& distribution services or equivalent area of practice
  • Proven experience in stock control management
  • Proven experience of using pharmacy computer systems and processes to manage pharmaceuticals
  • Proven experience in training staff
  • Proven experience of completed audit work
  • Experience in working with Standard Operating Procedures
  • Proven experience of managing staff/teams including line management, appraisal and PDR
  • Knowledge of Ascribe Pharmacy systems
Skills, Knowledge & Ability Essential
  • Ability to prioritise and plan work effectively, including ability to delegate
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Advanced IT skills
  • Ability to write policies, guidelines and SOPs
  • Ability to appraise performance and identify training needs
  • Knowledge of all regulations and legislation relevant to pharmaceutical purchasing and distribution
