An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Older Persons Mental Health inpatient team at Auckland Park Hospital. We are looking for an individual who has an interest in the care of older people in our services to contribute to our team. The role can be challenging but rewarding , and will afford the successful candidates to work as part of a supportive multi-disciplinary team that is focused on delivering high standards of care through evidence based practice. A supportive package will also be in place with team and managerial supervision as well as ongoing opportunities for personal training and development.
These vacancies are across both our male and female organic wards which provide assessment and treatment for older people experiencing complex organic mental health problems.
A flexible approach is required as these posts involve working a 24 hour shift pattern, covering both day shift and night shift covering 7 days a week.
Main duties of the job
There is no age barrier to becoming unwell in later life with both mental and physical health problems. Our progressive Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) inpatient service at Auckland Park Hospital deliver high quality, accessible, person-centred care to the population of older people which the Trust serves.
The service offers assessment, diagnosis and treatment for older people who are suffering from an organic illness, alongside complex physical health problems or related frailty.
We have a multi-disciplinary inpatient team including nurses, medical staff, a physical health care practitioner, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychology. There is local access to nutrition and dietetic staff within MHSOP. We work in partnership with local Community Teams and our Care Home Liaison Team
You will be a Registered Mental Health Nurse and able to demonstrate continuing professional development, effective generic nursing skills and the confidence to meet the requirements of a Band 5 position working with the older person.

Person Specification Qualification Essential
- RNMH, current professional registration with NMC.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
- MIP, FLIP, ENB 998 Teaching & Assessing in Clinical Practice or City & Guilds 730 Teaching in Adult Education or willingness to work towards. Qualification must be achieved within agreed timescale.
- Trained Clinical Supervisor (within agreed timescale).
- Key skills in literacy, numeracy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent)
- Practice assessor for Student Nurses
- ECG
- Venepuncture
- Evidenced based knowledge of best practice in caring for patients in the designated field.
- Care Programme Approach and its application in practice.
- Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice.
- Knowledge of MHA and MCA
- Experience of inpatient Mental Health Nursing
- Working within MDT
- Working collaboratively with service users and their families/carers
- Experience of working with the elderly
