The Senior Nurse Manager role in Urgent and Inpatient Care is a pivotal position in ensuring safety and quality for inpatient mental health services and home treatment, ensuring quality care is available for patients at times of crisis and vulnerability.
This vacancy has arisen in our North Devon locality and is based in the North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple. There is a good variety in the role, which oversees acute inpatient ward Moorland View - previous winner at the Positive Practice Awards, the newly formed Rehabilitation and Recovery service (8 bed Ocean View ward and community team), the Clozapine monitoring service and Home Treatment team, serving the North Devon locality.
There is variation between local working and more strategic work across the Directorate. There are opportunities for mentoring from other senior nurse managers and you will receive support to develop into the role.
Main duties of the job
The Senior Nurse Manager will be key to supporting the safe staffing of the teams, requiring innovative and flexible thinking at times and ensuring the services are a welcoming place for learners and staff. North Devon has an excellent reputation for supporting apprenticeships and 'growing' staff locally who want to develop in their careers and remain in North Devon. The Senior Nurse Manager role is key in supporting and maintaining this.
Working alongside the senior clinical multi-disciplinary team, the Senior Nurse Manager takes a lead role in ensuring flow through the inpatient services and managing delays and in maintaining and improving standards of care, particularly in relation to Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and CQC compliance.
The successful candidate will need to be creative, compassionate, approachable but with the ability to make at times difficult decisions and to communicate these. Experience is required in managing teams, complex HR and safeguarding cases.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
- Professional RMN qualification
- Degree, or equivalent experience
- Mentorship qualification
- Postgraduate qualification
- Experience of NHS or Social Care management or equivalent
- Experience in the assessment and formulation of Care Plans, Assessment and Monitoring of Patient Care
- Experience in the development, management, co-ordination of staff and services
- Experience of liaising with other disciplines, agencies and providers to assess, deliver and monitor services for clients in an In Patient setting
- Experience of providing supervision and appraisal
- Previous experience in a leadership role
- Experience and proven track record of managing unit budgets
- Project Management of proven service development
