Main duties of the job

As a Registered Mental Nurse with current NMC registration you will have recent experience working with Asylum Seekers and Refugees, the challenges they overcome and the resilience and resources they have acquired. With strong communication and organisational skills and a flexible approach, you will work collaboratively with patients and key partners to facilitate the best possible patient experience and outcomes.

You will demonstrate the ability to effectively and efficiently assess, plan, provide and evaluate evidence based nursing care for patients.

You will demonstrate strong clinical reasoning and prioritisation skills and be able to work effectively, both independently and as a member of a team.

You will have a commitment to professional development and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.

You will organise and prioritise your own day-to-day work tasks and activities and delegate tasks to junior colleagues.

Job description Job responsibilities

The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and formulation of the service users needs, including the development of a relevant care plan based upon the service users negotiated goals and relevant evidence based interventions. The post holder will be part of the Asylum Seeker and Refugee team providing specialist mental health screening and assessment for Asylum Seekers and refugees who are located within the boundaries of Stoke-on-Trent. This includes mental health, and supporting physical health assessment, that is offered to adults and children.

The core aim of the service is to ensure that people are able to access primary healthcare services through:
  • Improving access to Primary, Community and Secondary Care;
  • Informing Service Users on the NHS Healthcare System;
  • Signposting to other agencies as appropriate;
  • Promptly identifying Mental Health needs;
  • Mental Health Screening and signposting to other services/agencies
  • Educating Clinical and Non Clinical Staff
  • Acting as information resource to other professionals on asylum issues.
  • Supporting main stream services with complex cases
  • Supporting the person and family/carers throughout until their discharge as required / appropriate.

The post holder, will work as part of the specialist team to provide nursing interventions that support individuals to meet their agreed goals and coordinate and/ or participate in the review of progress towards those goals, utilising recommended outcome measures, involving the service user and any identified carer throughout the clinical pathway.

Person Specification Qualifications & Training Essential
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse on NMC Register
  • BSc degree in nursing or equivalent level
  • Relevant post-grad qualification and /or relevant experience such as experience working within Asylum Seekers
Desirable
  • Post-registration education in Older People's mental health
  • Ability to support physical health assessment for TB /willingness to learn
  • Registered mentor
  • Psychological intervention qualification i.e. Solution Focussed Brief Therapy / CBT, Family work
Experience Essential
  • Experience of assessing, planning, co-ordinating and managing people with mental health problems
Desirable
  • Experience of working in a variety of healthcare settings and making decisions autonomously
  • Experience of working with individuals who have experienced trauma i.e. torture, human trafficked, as well as other mental health issues prevalent in this client group
  • Experience of working with Asylum Seekers and Refugees experiencing mental health related difficulties
Skills and Knowledge Essential
  • Skills of assessing, planning and evaluating care, for people with mental health related difficulties, utilising the principles of Recovery
  • Skilled in the assessment of clinical risk and developing and communicating appropriate risk management plans
  • Knowledge of Mental Health Act, the Mental Capacity Act and DOLS
  • Knowledge of the physical health needs and monitoring requirements for asylum seekers and refugees mental health services and physical health services
  • Knowledge of pharmacological interventions prescribed in mental health
Desirable
  • Skilled in utilising specific assessments and outcome measures
  • Experience undertaking venepuncture and interpreting physical health investigations and providing physical health promotion advice including: weight, BMI, blood pressure, smoking, alcohol, drugs (prescribed and non-prescribed)
  • Ability to demonstrate the positive application of our behaviours. o Respectful oHonest and Trustworthy o Caring and Compassionate o Taking the time to talk and listen
  • Ability to access any local resources and to use networking where possible
