As part of the transformation of Children and Adolescent Mental Health services CNWL NHS foundation Trust are responding by developing a service to provide rapid response, prompt assessment, and where appropriate intensive time limited interventions for children and young people up to the age of 18, who are experiencing an acute mental health or emotional crisis and then transfer to their local CAMHS. The Service will aim to work with young people experiencing severe mental health difficulties in the least restrictive environment, consistent with the need for their own safety and the safety of others. Opportunities have arisen for experienced CAMHS Liaison and Crisis Support CAMHS Clinicians (Band 6) with generic CAMHS experience to work within our pathway.

These are full-time permanent posts and are part of a well-established team where professional development and innovative work is actively encouraged. The post holder will, on a rota basis, provide a 7 day crisis service for young people experiencing mental health problems in the Milton Keynes area. The post will be based within MKUH and the post holder will be expected to maintain the close links with the Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will carry out initial assessments of children and young people presenting in the A&E Department and on the wards of Milton Keynes General Hospital in mental health crisis, following an overdose, psychosis, deliberate self-harm or suicidal ideation.

The focus will be on children and young people presenting at Emergency Department (ED) and on the medical wards, ensuring effective psycho-social assessment, risk assessment and discharge planning including referral to appropriate services, and sign posting to relevant third sector partners.

The post holder will also liaise with colleagues and provide education, support and advice to staff within general hospital setting on a range of areas aimed at improving their understanding and management of mental health and self-harm.

The post holder will undertake home support to avoid admission to hospital or to minimise length of time spent in hospital by providing an intensive community package of immediate post-discharge support to children/young people.

The post will include professional and practice development and ensuring high quality client centred care is delivered. The post holder will work with senior colleagues within the team to maintain high standards of care and practice and to empower colleagues to take on a greater range of clinical tasks to improve client care in the specialist CAMHS service.

Job description Job responsibilities

The post holder will provide intensive home treatment/support for up to 8 weeks. Provide emergency (within 4 hours) or urgent (within 24-48hrs) response to young people presenting to A&E, or have been referred to the Home Treatment Team via agreed crisis referral pathways.

The post holder will undertake home support to avoid admission to hospital or to minimise length of time spent in hospital by providing an intensive community package of immediate post-discharge support to children/young people.

To provide evidence based, short term interventions to children and young people such as: distraction/relaxation techniques, positive coping strategies, positive risk management, safety planning and risk reduction (self-harming behaviours), psycho education to service users and families/carers, and CBT-based interventions focussed on anxiety management.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • oDegree/Diploma in Nursing
  • oProfessional registration with Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • oPost registration student assessor training.
Desirable
  • oHigher degree
  • oPost registration training in a treatment modality such as CBT, DBT or MBT
  • oRecent Safeguarding children training
  • oEvidence of ongoing professional development.
Experience Essential
  • oPost-qualification experience in a Band 6 role.
  • oCombination of the following
  • oAdult/CAMHS Acute Admission/Triage ward
  • oCommunity Mental Health Team
  • oAdult Crisis Resolution Team/Home Treatment Team
  • oPsychiatric Liaison Nurse position or role.
  • oAssessment and Brief Treatment Team or similar service
  • oPsychiatric Assessment Team in an in-reach/outreach setting
  • oCAMHS Team
  • oExperience of assessing and managing crisis of those with a severe mental illness in person and on the telephone
  • oExperience of implementing and monitoring standards of care
  • oExperience of working within a multidisciplinary team
  • oRisk assessment/management.

  • Experience of participation in case conferences and reviews
  • oExperience of delivering child protection training
  • oExperience of working with adolescents and families
  • oExperience of supervising junior staff within own and/or other disciplines
  • oExperience of using a range of therapeutic approaches
