Swaleside is a training prison, taking inmates with more than 12 months left to serve. It has about 1,100 sentenced inmates, of whom about 500 are serving life sentences.

The prison has an in-patient unit with 12 beds. About 60% of the beds are occupied by prisoners who have mental health difficulties requiring psychiatrist overview.

Swaleside hosts a Psychologically Informed Prison Environment (PIPE unit) for prisoners with personality disorders, which is led by Oxleas psychologists. This has consultant psychiatrist input from The John Howard Centre.

The appointee shares secretarial support and an office with the inreach team in Swaleside.

Main duties of the job

Clinical work - HMP Swaleside and HMP Standford Hill (to share clinical responsibilities with senior specialty doctor) 6 DCC
  • Assessment and follow-up of prisoners in the outpatients department (occasionally on the houseblocks)
  • In Swaleside, which has an in-patient unit, the postholder will review in-patients at the request of colleagues (this in-patient unit is expected to close, but the timescale for this is uncertain).
  • liaising with services outside the prison to arrange CPAs, aftercare plans or transfers to hospital
  • attendance at a multi-disciplinary team meeting on the day that the postholder is in the prison
  • any other care which could reasonably be expected of a consultant acting in an in-reach capacity in a prison

HMP East Sutton Park: occasional cover if required

East Sutton Park prison is a female open prison with a roll of up to 100 inmates.

Quality improvement/Research/Teaching- (4 SPA)
  • These 4 sessions can be used flexibly and the post holders can base themselves remotely (Base of their choice) unless required to be on site for data collection or clinical activities associated with this.
  • The activities could include clinical audits, research projects, service improvement or other tasks associated with clinical governance
  • The research or quality improvement activity may be part of further education such as masters or PhD or other postgraduate qualifications

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical duties of post holder, 10 PAs (direct clinical care 6 PAs + clinical governance 4 PAs)

The post holder will be eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register in Forensic Psychiatry or General Adult Psychiatry.

The duties of the post holder will include:
  • Consultant leadership for the In-reach teams at HMP Swaleside
  • A management role in an aspect of quality assurance
  • Inclusion in the forensic out-of-hours work (1 week in 14) weekly rota.
  • Consultancy work offered by the Specialist Forensic Consultants. This will be allocated as per a rota consisting of Consultants and Specialty Registrars.

The post holder will have 4 PAs allocated in their job plan for undertaking activities that support the professional role such as teaching, training, clinical management, clinical governance, service development and other relevant activities.
