An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Inpatient Psychology Service at Langdon Hospital, for an appropriately qualified Band 7 Practitioner Psychologist.A trainee who is nearing completion of their training will also be considered for a Band 6 training role. Upon successful qualification, the post holder will then be eligible for the Band 7 role,

You will work as part of an innovative Psychology Team, which provides specialist psychological work to patients at Langdon Hospital, with the opportunity to work across the directorate.

The Psychology Team at Langdon includes experienced and enthusiastic Clinical, Forensic, Counselling Psychologists, Psychotherapists, Arts Therapists, Trainee Psychologists and a team of Assistant Psychologists, one each for our 6 wards across the Medium and Low Secure and Open estate.

Forensic mental health settings provide an enviable clinical environment in which to pursue clinical interests and develop specialism in areas such as risk assessment, offence focused work, individual or group work, trauma, psychosis, personality and relational difficulties, as well as cognitive and developmental difficulties. The work can involve a range of assessment and therapeutic approaches, modalities and timeframes.

Main duties of the job

Provide a Psychology service to people who are resident at Langdon's various Inpatient wards & sections.

Providing local clinical leadership, co-ordination and supervision for trainees and volunteers employed by or attached to the Psychology Service, under the general direction and supervision of the Professional Lead.

Carrying a specialist caseload of clients, and providing advice and consultancy to patients, family members, carers and professionals.

To provide clinical supervision and consultation to the wider multi-disciplinary teams in the locality as part of integrated mental health team.

The post holder will be supported by senior colleagues within their specialist field. They will be expected to make good use of the expertise of others within the service to further develop their clinical skills with this client group.

To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the service / local team.

The post holder will receive regular professional and clinical supervision in accordance to Trust policy and to Professional Practice Guidelines set out by the British Psychological Society or appropriate designated Professional Body. Observe, and abide by all relevant Professional Codes of Conduct and Practise including the British Psychological Society. The post holder will be fully registered with the Health Professions Council as a condition of employment.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • PGDip or Doctorate in Forensic, Counselling or Clinical Psychology which enables registration as a HCPC Practitioner Psychologist.
Desirable
  • Further training or experience in clinical specialism
  • Further training in related area
  • Further training in at least one (other) psychological therapy
Knowledge and skills Essential
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across a wide range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
  • Experience, and/or training in diversity awareness and social inequality
  • Experience of working under supervision in adult mental health contexts
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
Desirable
  • Communication and Working Relationship Skills
  • Excellent verbal, nonverbal and written communication skills
  • IT and Computer Literacy
  • Analytical & Judgemental Skills
  • Ability to integrate complex data; make highly skilled evaluations and decisions; and take a long term perspective.
Experience Essential
  • Knowledge and familiarity of secure services; and of the services in the NHS where psychology and psychological therapies is commonly applied.
  • An understanding of providing psychological therapy for service users presenting with severe and complex mental health problems.
