The post holder will be a CBT therapist working within Sheffield IAPT providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to adults with depression and a range of anxiety disorders in line with NICE guidance and the National IAPT manual.

Full and part time (minimum 22.5 hours), temporary and permanent positions available (blend of remote/in person working).

Applications welcomed by both newly qualified and experienced practitioners (there is an expectation of working towards BABCP accreditation).

Main duties of the job

  • A full time (37.5) therapist is required to offer 20 hours of therapy per week (reduced on a pro rata basis).

Principalduties

1. CLINICAL
  • Assess patient's suitability for CBT interventions in line with NICE guidance in a stepped care model.
  • Providing consultations with IAPT staff on suitability, feeding back to stakeholders on suitability issues to support the patient to access the right intervention. Completing onward referral to other services where appropriate.
  • Assess and manage risk collaboratively with the patient and adhere to the IAPT risk protocol; working to ensure the safety of the patient and others.
  • Formulate, implement and evaluate therapy programmes for patients.
  • To complete all mandated session by session outcome measures.
  • The post holder will work with people from different cultural backgrounds; andwillif necessary, work using an interpreter. The post holder will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to equal opportunities.
  • Use highly developed communication skills in working with people to understand their personal and often very sensitive difficulties
  • Exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment and treatment of patients in line with the service and the National IAPT manual.
  • Educate and involve family members and others in treatment as appropriate; conveying CBT and other psychological formulations with sensitivity in easily understood language.
  • Adhere to an agreed activity contract relating to the number of patient contacts offered, and clinical sessions carried out per day in order to minimise waiting times and ensure treatment is delivered in an accessible timely manner.
  • Keep coherent records of all clinical activity in line with service protocols; and complete all requirements relating to data collection within the service.
  • Work closely with other members of the team ensuring appropriate arrangements are in place to maintain a stepped care approach.
  • Assess and integrate issues surrounding work and employment into the overall therapy process
  • Liaise with other health and social care staff from other agencies as appropriate to appropriate care for patients.
  • Demonstrate clinical leadership appropriate to banding where required.2. TRAINING AND SUPERVISION


  • Contribute to the development; teaching and training of other mental health professionals and other staff working in the service.
  • Attend clinical supervision on a regular basis as agreed with Manager and as outlined in the National IAPT manual.
  • Ensure all mandatory training is up to date in line with service protocol.

  • 3. PROFESSIONAL
  • Be guided by agreed Trust and Sheffield IAPT specific policies and procedures; Best Practice Guidance; SOPS (Standard Operating Policies)
  • To ensure record keeping in line with Sheffield IAPT Standard Operating Procedures. This includes contemporaneous notes completed within 24 hours on the agreed patient record system, checking SHSC patient administration system prior to taking on new patients to check any risk or suitability issues and to send a discharge summary to GP practices once completed treatment.
  • Commitment to improving individual recovery rates (minimum individual recovery rate of 50%), using data, supervision and CPD for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure the maintenance of standards of practice according to the employer and any regulating, professional and accrediting bodies (e.g.BABCP), and keep up to date on new recommendations/guidelines set by the Department of Health (e.g.NHS plan, National Service Framework, National Institute for Clinical Excellence).
  • Ensure that patient confidentiality isprotected at all times.
  • Be awareof, andkeep up to date with advances in the spheres of CBT and other psychological therapies.
  • Ensure clear professional objectives are identified, discussed and reviewed with liner manager and senior therapists (as appropriate) on a regular basis as part of continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Attend and prepare for clinical/managerial supervision on a regular basis as agreed with Manager.
  • Participate in individual performance reviews and respond to agreed individual objectives aligned with meeting the service objectives of achieving all three National IAPT standards on access, waiting times and recovery rates.
  • Keep up to date all records in relation to CPD and ensure personal development plan maintains up to date specialist knowledge of latest theoretical and service delivery models/developments.
  • Attend relevant conferences / workshops in line with identified professional objectives.
  • Participate in service improvement by highlighting issues and implementing changes in practice.

  • 4. ADVISORY / LIAISON
  • Provide an advisory service on matters related to the practice and delivery of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as required by the service.
  • Promote and maintain positive relationships and links with Primary Care and Secondary Care Staff to help co-ordinate the provision of an effective Psychological Therapies Service.

  • 5. GENERAL
  • To contribute to the development of best practice within the service.
  • To maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and procedures in relation to Mental Health and Primary Care Services.

  • The post holder should be comfortable in the use of computer technology, have basic keyboard skills and have the ability to use email. In addition to this the ability to conduct videoconferencing as a treatment option
  • To be worked over a minimum of 3 days which is to include Thursday afternoons as this is service wide non-clinical time for you to be able to contribute to profession specific and service wide meetings, forums and masterclasses to support you in your role and CPD.

  • This is not an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities and in discussion with the manager the postholder may be required to undertake other duties which fall within the Banding of the post. The job description will be reviewed regularly in the light of changing service requirements and any such changes will be discussed with the postholder.

    Person Specification Qualifications Essential
    • Recognised qualification as a High Intensity IAPT CBT therapist
    • Accredited with an appropriate professional body (or actively working towards accreditation) e.g. BABCP
    • oPost-graduate, doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or equivalent) accredited by the HCPC and/or BPS
    • oRegistration as a Clinical Psychologist with the HCPC
    • oAccredited with an appropriate professional body e.g. BABCP (or as a minimum standard, provisional accreditation)
    • oRegistration and accreditation with a professional body must be maintained throughout employment
    • oA core mental health professional (i.e. Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, Registered Mental Health Nurse)
    • oPost-graduate Diploma qualification in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
    • oProvisional/full accreditation with BABCP for CBT
