South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic, full time, substantive Consultant Psychiatrist to join our well-established In-patient Adult (working age) Rehabilitation Unit situated in Heather close within the London Borough of Lewisham.

Higher trainees (ST6 and above) who are due to CCT in August 2023 are very welcome to apply for this post, if you meet our eligibility criteria.

The unit is a cluster of 24 bedded mixed and single sex units comprising of:
  • Number 1 Heather Close which is a male only 8 bedded high dependency unit and
  • Number 5 Heather Close, which is split into 2, houses both with 8 bed-sit units (16 bedded) for male and female patients.

Main duties of the job

Lewisham offers rehabilitation services to eligible service users via two interconnected service pathways which work closely with all other acute mental health services within the directorate. These are as follows:
  • Heather close in patient Unit
  • Enhanced recovery team (ERT) - this is a well-established community rehabilitation service led by an experienced full time Consultant Psychiatrist , an experienced team manager and a range of MDT staff. The broad ethos of the team is to support patients in their recovery path, to gain more independence and have a meaningful life. The team has a caseload of around 150 patients with mainly psychosis diagnoses, mostly on CPA, who live in residential care homes and high support placements. There are a cohort of patients on CTOs and DOLs. ERT also do Placement reviews on patients who Lewisham have placed out of area. ERT has a close relationship with Heather Close unit in Hither Green. Some of their community patients will have had admissions there, so ERT will often provide close liaison to their ward rounds and management plans.

    Job description Job responsibilities

    • Provide Consultant input and contribute as member of the clinical leadership team
    • Provide Consultant input to triage system for referrals into the service as required.
    • When acting as Approved Clinician to take consultant responsibility and oversee assessment and management of patients, including medication regimes, advising and working closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
    • Chair MDT ward rounds and CPA reviews, ensuring participation of patient, carers and the MDT.
    • Assist with diagnosis, medication reviews, management plans, risk assessments, rehabilitation and self-help plans for patients with complex mental health problems.
    • Work with service to develop a collaborative care model for patients with disorders falling within the remit of the team.
    • Provide clinical assessments of patients as necessary.
    • Support MDT in their diagnosis, management and treatment of patients through case discussions, joint consultations supervision and bespoke training.
    • Maintain effective communication with GPs, patients and their carers.
    • To provide clinical input to multi-disciplinary case conferencing around complex patients.
    • Provide clinical assessments and supervision to trainees.
    • To engage with local service user and carer groups.

    Person Specification Educational Qualification Essential
    • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
    Desirable
    • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
    • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
    • Experience in other relevant specialties such as general adult psychiatry (inpatient and community settings
    Eligibility Essential
    • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
    • Included on the GMC Specialist Register with CCT or equivalent, in Rehabilitation Psychiatry or dual CCT in Rehab and General Adult Psychiatry OR within six months of doing so
    • Approved clinician status and under S12 OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
    Desirable
    • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
    Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience Essential
    • Rehabilitation Psychiatry experience
    • Excellent knowledge in specialty. Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
    • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty. Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
    Desirable
    • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
    • Experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist
    Academic Skills and Lifelong Learning Essential
    • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training. Ability to work in and lead team
    • Demonstrate commitment to shared leadership & collaborative working to deliver improvement.
    • Participated in continuous professional development. Participated in research or service evaluation. Able to use and appraise clinical evidence.
    • Has actively participated in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes
    Desirable
    • Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post. Reflected on purpose of CPD undertaken
    • Experienced in clinical research and / or service evaluation.
    • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications.
    • Has led quality improvement projects leading to service change or improved outcomes to patients
