Experienced Occupational Therapist - Rheumatology and Hands Service

A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Experienced Occupational Therapist to join our Rheumatology and Hands Service at Hywel Dda University Health Board.

As part of the occupational therapy service you will be working alongside a range of professionals (Physiotherapists, Rheumatology Consultants and Clinical Nurse Specialists) and will deliver focused occupational therapy interventions within an out-patient setting, currently based within Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen but can involve working across the three counties covered by the health board.

Main duties of the job

Experience of assessing and treating patients with a range of rheumatology and musculoskeletal hand conditions would be beneficial. Some training is available depending upon need and hours worked. The post will include hand assessments, self-management advice including joint protection, fatigue and pain management, plus rehabilitation programmes. It also includes provision of custom made thermoplastic splints and prefabricated splints.

Involvement in the wider Occupational Therapy Service in relation to Service Improvement and Professional Development is also an expected part of this role.

You will provide clinical interventions for patients with inflammatory arthritis and related complex conditions, demonstrating a high level of communication, assessment and core OT skills within a specialist out-patient therapy team.

We will provide you with professional support and clinical supervision. We will provide relevant training opportunities to develop your skills as required depending upon previous experience. We will provide a supportive working environment to develop your clinical and leadership skills.

The post holder will be expected to travel across Carmarthenshire and at times the Health Board footprint to visit patients at home and between sites and undertake service development. Mileage allowance is payable and a lease car scheme is available.

Person Specification Qualifications and Knowledge Essential
  • Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Current HCPC Registration
  • Knowledge of relevant current health and social care legislation applicable to role.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software
  • Knowledge of a range of rehabilitation interventions across all therapies. Understanding and application of clinical governance, including research and audit methodology
  • Understanding and application of relevant outcome measures to demonstrate effectiveness.
  • Knowledge of other services that link across primary/secondary/intermediate care.
  • Working knowledge of therapeutic equipment.
  • Knowledge of Health Board and priorities.
  • Accredited Practice Educator
  • Accredited Agored Assessor
Experience Essential
  • Significant post graduate experience of working as an occupational therapist across a range of settings and variety of conditions
  • Managing a complex caseload
  • Working independently with indirect or arms length supervision.
  • Delegation and Supervision of staff
  • Experience of coping independently with distressing or emotional situations in challenging work environments
  • working as part of a team
  • Experience of contributing to service development and implementing service changes
  • Use of adapted techniques for improving patient outcomes
