Speech and Language Therapist (Band 6)

Location: Mile End Hospital, Bancroft Road, Mile End, E1 4DG

We are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our dynamic multi-disciplinary community team. The team provides specialist health and social care services to adults with learning disabilities in Tower Hamlets. The Speech and Language Therapy team input into many distinct pathways within the integrated health/social care service. Tower Hamlets is a vibrant inner city borough with diverse communities and good, varied transport links in and around the borough.

Main duties of the job

Tower Hamlets CLDS is one of four learning disability services provided by East London (ELFT) NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will have opportunities to network with speech and language therapists across ELFT as well as work closely with other disciplines within CLDS. The post holder will be expected to participate in innovative service quality improvement projects and work alongside social workers in providing telephone advice on Duty. The service is committed to continuous professional development with access to internal and external training opportunities.

About us

The Community Learning Disability Service (CLDS) is organised into three multi-disciplinary integrated teams (Transition, Mental Health and Behavioural Support, and Community Health and Wellbeing), focusing on short, intensive assessment and advice interventions, consultation and training. The Band 6 post works across all teams with opportunities to complete eligibility assessments, Speech and Language Therapy assessments, short-term therapy interventions in both communication and eating and drinking skills. Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team and working adults and/ or children and young people with learning disabilities, including associated physical disabilities, sensory disabilities and/or mental health problems is essential.

The post holder will be line managed within one of the three teams within CLDS but will work across teams as required. The post holder will receive monthly management and clinical supervision.

This post falls within the Criminal Records Disclosure Policy and therefore a criminal record check will be applied for, for successful candidate.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Degree or PG Diploma in Clinical Communication Studies from RCSLT approved training establishment
  • Current HCPC Registration and licence to practice
Desirable
  • Post-basic qualification in dysphagia
  • Training in student supervision
Experience Essential
  • Specialist knowledge acquired through degree, experience of working with communication impairment and specialist post graduate training.
  • Post registration clinical experience working with adults/children with learning disabilities
  • Evidence of experience of assessment and intervention with adults or children and young people with learning disabilities, including associated physical disabilities, sensory disabilities and/or mental health problems
  • Experience of using electronic recording systems and workflows to document interventions and extract data
Knowledge Essential
  • Good clinical skills/knowledge across a wide range of dysphagia and communication difficulties
  • Ability to adapt communication to the communication needs of others including according to cognitive ability, language and culture
  • To have highly developed communication skills including knowledge of augmentative communication systems (signing and symbol use)
  • Ability to adapt communication style in order to establish a client's ability to give consent & to implement effective interventions
  • Skills in delivering presentations and training including basic adaptations to presentation/training style for a range of audiences.
