Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a motivated Band 6 Occupational Therapist to work on our male acute ward at The Radbourne Unit.

The post holder will provide occupational assessment and treatment using a range of appropriate interventions based on the recovery philosophy and standardised occupational therapy assessments. They will build social networks and work in partnership with other agencies.

Main duties of the job

The Senior OT will support the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist in providing strong clinical leadership, ensuring evidence-based practice is delivered to improve the quality of practice. This may also include assuming the full range of responsibilities and accountabilities in the absence of the Clinical Lead OT.

There may be periods during the working week, whereby, the individual will be supporting shared tasks alongside nursing colleagues and contribute towards the overall functioning of the ward. Applicants are required to work a flexible shift pattern, including unsociable hours over a seven day period, to meet the needs of our service users.

  • Demonstrate expert knowledge in the acute setting, ensuring this is disseminated in a constructive and effective way in the context of the recovery philosophy and the social inclusion agenda.
  • Conduct rigorous occupational and environmental analyses ensuring that appropriate evidence based clinical risk assessments are undertaken, and that findings are reported to the team and the referring agency.
  • Assess the needs of service users in complex situations using professional knowledge, judgements and skills to account for decisions made.
  • Provide individual and / or group interventions, assist the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist in reviewing practice and developing interventions in line with current evidence base and national guidance.
  • Collaborate with all providers of care throughout the health community who are involved in planning, delivering and evaluating care, working flexibly in accordance with the needs of service-users and the service as a whole.
  • Support the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist in providing strong clinical leadership, ensuring that wherever possible evidence-based practice is delivered to improve the quality of practice and to create responsive services.
  • Work as a member of the multidisciplinary team, working in collaboration with nursing colleagues and supporting shared skills.
  • Ensuring Junior staff are supported in their role and preceptorship programme.


Person Specification Qualification Essential
  • Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • 2 years
  • Current HPC registration
Desirable
  • APPLE or other equivalent practice placement educator qualification
Experience/Skills Essential
  • Experience in adult mental health settings
Experience/Skills Essential
  • Supervision of junior staff
  • Evidence of standardised assessments
  • Evidence of using MOHO or other model of practice
  • Facilitating a wide variety of therapeutic interventions
  • Demonstrates leadership skills
  • Demonstrates experience of MDT working and with external agencies / health care providers
Knowledge Essential
  • Knowledge / experience of the recovery approach in mental health
Desirable
  • Knowledge / experience of clinical audit
