We are delighted that our well-established Forensic Pathway for adults with a learning disability is being significantly enhanced by recruiting additional Occupational Therapists. This enhances the MDT offer for people with a learning disability, across the Black Country, who are (or who may be at high risk of) contact with the Criminal Justice system.

We are looking for a dynamic and capable Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our established team, based in our low-secure forensic in-patient unit.

Occupational Therapy is a core role in our teams working alongside other disciplines. You should be confident in developing and delivering recovery focused interventions across all occupational domains with both individuals and groups.

Main duties of the job

OT has a core role that requires dedication from the whole team to deliver shared pathways to service users which helps them to become more independent and live in the least restrictive environment.

To manage, assess, plan and implement interventions for a caseload of complex service users with a diagnosed learning disability and forensic need, addressing occupational performance and skills deficits to meet service user's needs.

The role offers a wide variety of opportunities to develop and extend your skills. We offer a commitment to support staff, regular supervision and CPD from our band 7 advanced practitioner Occupational Therapist.

We offer the opportunity to develop skills utilising training and work shadowing and offer extensive support, utilising reflective practice groups, peer and individual supervision.

Job description Job responsibilities

The team will provide a full range of assessments, interventions, support, training and advice to individuals themselves, their families and paid carers and the network of multi-agency stakeholders who are involved in the care and support of this complex client group. Guided by Good Life principles of recovery, the team will also maintain very close liaison with and will develop seamless pathways with the range of existing and new specialist mental health community teams, secure and rehabilitation services and social care agencies across the Black Country in order to ensure that people with a learning disability and forensic needs are also well supported by the full range of services and opportunities that meet their whole life person centred needs and aspirations.

Working alongside the band 7 advanced practitioner OT, you will be completing a variety of assessments and treatments based around risk, to ensure that the individual has good occupational balance ensuring that the individual has a balance of occupations that meets their health needs, that they have occupations made accessible to them, To be free from barriers to occupations and that they have occupations that are valued by themselves and their community that change throughout their lives.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Evidence of registration with the HCPC
  • Post graduate training relevant to Learning Disability / mental health
Desirable
  • Sensory Integration Training
Experience Essential
  • Use of a range of assessment tools to plan treatment and support recovery
  • Evidence of managing caseloads with adults with Learning Disability / mental health problems
  • Experience of working in an in-patient setting
  • Significant experience of supervising junior staff and of being a Placement Educator
Desirable
  • oEvidence of managing adults with learning Disability and behaviours that challenge
Knowledge Essential
  • Knowledge and application of OT assessment and intervention in adults with Learning Disability / mental health needs
  • Application of risk assessment in treatment
Skills Essential
  • Ability to use own initiative, under supervision.
  • Understanding and a commitment to multi-disciplinary team working
  • Commitment and enthusiasm to continue to develop occupational therapy
  • Ability to cope in potentially stressful situations using appropriate support
  • Commitment to person-centred care
