Main duties of the job

The Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Wellbeing Service provides talking therapy services for people experiencing common mental health problems

We are seeking a Senior Practitioner in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with post qualification training and experience in Long Term Physical Conditions (LTCs)/Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS)

The successful candidate will form an integral part of the leadership team, providing and developing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy interventions for patients with co-morbid LTCs/MUS in consultation with the Clinical Lead

The post-holder will be BABCP accredited and work autonomously, responsible for their own actions within the context of professional and BABCP guidelines/overall framework of the Service's objectives and policies

In the context of this Service, the post-holder will:
  • Identify/establish integrated pathways with physical health teams
  • Facilitate professional development of staff to work competently with patients with co-morbid, mental health and long term conditions - including providing training and clinical supervision
  • Monitor key performance indicators and develop plans to meet targets

The successful candidate will also hold a small clinical caseload

The service works core 9-5 hours but offers therapy opportunities for patients between the hours of 8am-8pm Monday to Friday, and in the future, on Saturday mornings. The successful candidates will ideally be prepared to work flexibly to meet service needs within these hours

Job description Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities
  • To provide specialist psychological assessments and treatments for clients with a with a range of anxiety disorders, depression and co-morbid LTCs/MUS,
  • Formulate, implement and evaluate individual therapy programmes for patients that with depression anxiety disorders and co-morbid LTCs/ MUS
  • Attend service meetings with colleagues from physical health services to establish and mange referral pathways into IAPT
  • Promote and maintain links with services across the Trust to help co-ordinate provision of an effective Psychological Therapies Service
  • Provide specialist advice to other professionals from the Trust and voluntary agencies in regard to our therapeutic service provision
  • Contribute to the teaching and training and supervision of mental health professionals and other staff working in the service
  • To continually monitor and evaluate therapy interventions provided to clients in the Integrated IAPT service, tailoring a development plan to achieve and improve overall performance

Person Specification Qualifications and Training Essential
  • Professional qualification in health or social care e.g. Clinical Psychology; RMN (or post-graduate training and qualifications in another sector to enable equivalent levels of responsibility with the client group in that setting)
  • Post-graduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (or an equivalent course which provides eligibility for accreditation as outlined below).
  • Membership and accreditation with British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy or the ability to demonstrate eligibility and active pursuit of this accreditation.
  • Additional specialist training in delivering CBT for clients with co-morbid Long Term Physical Health Conditions / Medically Unexplained Symptoms since obtaining CBT diploma (e.g. completion of IAPT Top-up training for LTC/MUS)
  • Additional specialist training relating to the clinical role as clinical supervisor, sufficient for BABCP accreditation as a supervisor in CBT.
Desirable
  • Masters level studies relating to cognitive behavioural therapy or Physical Health Psychology
  • Qualification in additional recognised psychological therapy or therapy modality.
Experience Essential
  • Minimum of 2 years experience of working effectively as a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, in a designated psychologist/CBT therapist post, within a multi-agency setting, relevant to the current post, including substantial experience of: oSpecialist psychological assessment and providing CBT to clients experiencing a range of mental health problems in the context of co-morbid Long Term Physical Health Conditions / Medically Unexplained Physical Symptoms. oDeveloping the psychological skills of other colleagues via collaborative clinical working, consultation and advice oContributing to the processes of service development and policy implementation particularly relating to CBT
  • Whilst working in a designated post as a CB therapist, the development of specialist CBT skills by receiving expert supervision from an appropriately trained and experienced clinical supervisor with specialist expertise in Physical Health Psychology or LTCs/MUS.
  • Experience of providing CBT supervision to qualified practitioners in CBT, and to colleagues in post-graduate CBT training
Knowledge and skills Essential
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and evaluation for patients with LTCs/MUS, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Current driving licence and use of own car to drive between office base, clinics, care facilities and clients' homes.
