This is a brand new role as a Nurse Consultant for the Hope and Extended Hope Service of Surrey.

This is an integrated service provided by CYPS MH Specialists, SCC Children Services and Education and aims to serve our most vulnerable young people who are at risk of hospital admission or out of county placement. There are 2 Hope Sites - Guildford and Epsom and your base can be either providing you are willing to visit both sites. Extended Hope provides services out of hours and has a house in Redhill. Our partnership with colleagues from social care and education is fundamental to providing this service and a great opportunity for collaborative working. We are interested in supporting you develop within your role and support training and development opportunities through our supervision, PDP and appraisal processes.

You will operationally report to the Associate Director, Suzanne Cain for the Hope Service and your Professional Lead will be Kate Sigov, Head of Nursing for CYPS.

The Hope Service is part of the Mindworks AllianceHome is the contract delivering MH and emotional wellbeing through traditional CAMHS/CYP Services alongside partners agencies such as counselling services, NAS and Barnardo's).

You will be connected with our SABP Nursing Directorate and work closely with the HoN for CYPS.

Main duties of the job

As Professional Lead for nursing within the Hope and Extended Hope Services you will provide leadership and expertise to the management of the services as well as your nursing team(s).

Your nurses will be located in both Epsom and Guildford - 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. We have nurses within Ext Hope (5pm-11pm, 7 days a week) and it will be important to explore how you can support them with their Clinical Team Lead as part of the whole provision. However we do not expect you to be working unsocial hours.

The nursing provision within Hope work alongside CAMHS Drs, Psychologists, Therapists, Social Workers, Teachers and Support Staff daily caring for CYP who either attend the day programme or who need crisis outreach support. The staff also assess and review CYP in our acute hospitals who are at risk of (T4) hospital admission or support the assessment of CYP detained to our HBPoS under S136 to explore diversion from hospital admission.

Your role would be to help us to develop this nursing model and to ensure we are delivering high quality, evidence based care. Through leadership, supervision and your expertise we wish to ensure the nurses you lead feel heard, supported and enabled to carry out their jobs well.

As an integrated service your knowledge and skills will be essential to the whole service model and as the job is new, an exciting time to sculp and develop this role.

You will be physically present within the service though some virtual work can be explored.

Leading the direction of development of clinical policy and practice that reflects the needs of children, young people (CYP) and families/carers, implementing evidence-based practice, and contributing further to the knowledge base by evaluation of practice, and implementation of innovation. Having an overview of quality across the Hope and Extended Hope pathway, reporting on learning from serious untoward incidents and complaints to the service, and leading on the improvement of the CYP and families/carers experience. Ensuring the implementation of improvement culture to improve practice and service delivery.

Job Overview:

The post holder will have responsibility to ensure participation and engagement in quality improvement. This will mean collaborative and partnership working not only within the services but with CYP and families/carers, multi-disciplinary staff groups as well as local and national organisations to support the delivery of the Divisional and organisational strategic direction and how Hope and Extended Hope contribute to this. This will mean receiving and providing highly complex information and using leadership skills including planning, organizing, persuasion, motivation, negotiating and empathetic/reassurance skills.

The Professional Lead will provide focus, direction, and empowerment to nurses ensuring that they are able to work to their highest potential, and that nursing within the service has a national and international profile. Direction of the development of nursing and health interventions within Hope and Extended Hope pathways, ensuring that the impact of this contribution is measurable, and that interventions remain consistent with the best available evidence. Ensure compliance with national and local standards across the pathway. The post holder will be responsible for making recommendations where no precedent is set, and for articulating the standards required. The Post Holder as an expert in their field will exercise their judgement on situations with unique elements and complicated aspects and communicate and lead any developments required in response. Record, promote and celebrate success within the nursing and health workforce, ensuring that nursing achievements are promoted and acknowledged. Contribute to the Trust wide management of under-performance when required, particularly ensuring that nurses are aware of the need to comply with local standards and the NMC Code of Conduct. Contribute to the wider Nursing Directorate within SABP and work closely with the Head of Nursing, the Nurse Consultants and other Professional Leads for CYPS. Clinical supervision will be with the Head of Nursing and Operational/Managerial supervision with the Associate Director for Hope Service.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Qualifications required
  • Professional nursing qualification and current registration
  • Masters degree or equivalent in a nursing related or leadership subject or relevant experience
  • Management qualification at Diploma level or above
  • Quality improvement methodology skills
Experience Essential
  • Sound experience of operating effectively as a senior manager in a healthcare environment for a significant period of time (at least 2 years)
  • Independent and supplementary prescribing would be desirable
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Significant experience of business, working with a range of commissioners/partners and successful performance delivery
  • Excellent working knowledge of clinical governance and strategic plans
  • Ability to provide consultation to a wide range of colleagues.
  • Demonstrable ability to think strategically, develop practical innovative and creative solutions to the management of strategic issues and complex problems.
  • Proven ability to successfully implement and manage Change and Service Redesign
  • Able to demonstrate skills in audit and evaluation of service provision
  • Experience of leadership, and success in workforce development, recruitment and retention.
  • Able to evaluate and implement evidence-based practice
  • Proven skill in budget management and success in support of financial recovery
