An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Occupational Therapist, to work as a Senior Occupational Therapist . The successful candidate will be joining an experienced, established team of Occupational Therapists to provide assessment and treatment to the residents of South East Essex. All patient contacts will be in the community, so there is an expectation of frequent travel across the geographical patch that we serve. Having access to a vehicle is essential to this role, along with a full valid UK driving license and existing business insurance cover. Professional support is provided from the current team of Band 7 OTs, as well as from the Head OT. The service operates from 08:30-16:30hrs, Monday to Friday, and is based in Southend-On-Sea.

The successful candidate will hold current HCPC Registration and have a broad range of clinical skills including supervisory experience. Flexible working is encouraged and welcomed within the team.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high standard of Occupational Therapy (OT) Service and manage a caseload of patients with complex conditions, using evidence-based / client-centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.

To provide leadership and support for junior staff working in the team, through supervision and appraisal, and to regularly supervise OT Students on placement.

To participate in the maintenance and development of OT services, taking responsibility for defined projects, and to assist the team with meeting local agendas.

Job description Job responsibilities

CLINICAL
  • To be responsible for the planning and delivery of Occupational Therapy Services within the area of complex medical conditions, prioritising clinical needs to provide an equitable & effective service.
  • To be responsible for managing a caseload of clients with complex needs, within a community setting.
  • To use high level knowledge, skills & experience in order to provide an OT Service to all clients with a general medical condition, in particular relating to the Community Setting.
  • To co-ordinate, implement & monitor client-centred goals as part of the overall treatment plan, using appropriate recognised assessment tools.
  • To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice to clients, carers, members of the voluntary sector & other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To maintain up-to-date knowledge & evidence of best practice in relation to OT practice, through formal training, meetings & informal learning.
  • To regularly evaluate OT Service provision in line with local & national research & developments.
  • To possess sufficient knowledge of red flags for physical health and increased presentations of risk necessitating emergency responses.
  • To apply competent and well established manual handling skills and significantly developed knowledge of aids and adaptations to promote maximum independence.
  • To participate in actively screening referrals into the service and prioritise these according to need.

COMMUNICATION
  • To establish robust communication networks with clients, carers and other public, private, independent & educational agencies.
  • To develop & maintain effective professional communication structures within EPUT including Care Co-ordination team and the wider Community OT teams.
  • To represent & promote the OT Service & keep all relevant parties up-to-date with service developments.

DOCUMENTATION
  • To ensure that junior OT and OTT staff maintain up-to-date written, electronic and activity data in accordance with Professional and Trust Standards.
  • To provide professional OT reports relevant to the practice setting.
  • To ensure that all information provided to clients & carers is presented in an understandable format.
  • To ensure that all documentation relating to the service is accurate & up-to-date.

LEADERSHIP, SUPERVISION & APPRAISAL
  • To provide professional leadership, direction & support to ensure the continuing development of specific junior OT/OTT staff.
  • Demonstrate ability to review and reflect on own practice & performance, through effective use of professional / operational supervision and appraisal, in line with local guidelines.
  • To establish an effective supervision framework for junior staff and contribute and participate in the Trusts appraisal process.
  • To be responsible for all matters regarding staff under your supervision, liaising with Clinical Lead OTs and Head OT as appropriate.
  • To demonstrate and impart professional skills & knowledge to other staff members appropriate to their grade.

TRAINING STAFF & STUDENTS
  • o contribute and co-ordinate OT Student Practice Placements within the OT Service.
  • To contribute to the induction & training of students and staff.
  • To be responsible for the supervision and development of Junior OTs/OTTs during their preceptorship.
  • To assist in the identification of training needs of staff and participate in the development and delivery of the Directorate & OT training plans.
  • To co-ordinate, when appropriate, other staff training & development needs.
  • To co-ordinate & contribute to in-service training & development programmes.

SERVICE DEVELOPMENT & DELIVERY
  • To work effectively as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, to support the planning and achievement of local & national service objectives.
  • To work with the management team to contribute to the delivery of the Trusts Development Plan for OT.
  • To be responsible for screening, prioritising & allocating new referrals, as appropriate.
  • To be responsible for identifying service developments / needs and liaising with the Service Manager in documenting annual service plans & contracts.
  • To actively engage with the Neighbourhood Working Agenda, lead on new developments and inform planning of new services.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTS
  • To apply specialist knowledge in order to establish professional competence and fitness to practice as a Lead O.T.
  • To demonstrate ongoing personal development through participation in internal & external development opportunities, recording learning outcomes in a portfolio.

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE, QUALITY & STANDARDS
  • To be responsible for the development of clinical governance & quality agenda for the service and lead on implementation as appropriate.
  • Assist with regular and unplanned audits for the service.
  • To take an active lead on the implementation of NSF & NICE Guidelines and to evaluate service provision in line with professional & government guidelines.
  • To be responsible for Standards of Service Delivery using Trust & OT Standards and Guidelines.
