This is an exciting and unique opportunity to join our team in Ellis Ward, an 18 (plus 2) bedded mixed adult inpatient ward, in a newly refurbished setting on the Tolworth Hospital site in South West London as a Consultant Psychiatrist.

We are looking for a consultant to join our inpatient mental health services, which are undergoing an exciting period of redevelopment into state of the art facilities.

The Tolworth Hospital site, is itself about to go through redevelopment as part of the Trust Estates Modernisation Programme. Tolworth is a small friendly site, with inpatient and community services, good parking facilities and an on-site canteen.

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated General Adult Consultant Psychiatrist with the interest and skills in providing strong medical leadership to take our services forward.The role is being offered on a permanent basis, alongside a tailored management leadership programme for those individuals who would be interested in pursuing this.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant role is based on Ellis ward an 18 (plus 2) bedded ward at Tolworth Hospital. The Consultant will have responsibility including Responsible Clinician responsibility for Mental Health Act issues for patients admitted and will provide clinical leadership to the ward team.

There are 10 Programmed Activities (PAs): 7.5PAs for Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5PAs for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).

The consultant will be involved in teaching and training medical students, and junior doctors. There is an active local Academic programme.

About our location:

To create the very best environment to care for our patients, this site's layout will be transformed in 2025 to add a number of wards to the existing three. Tolworth has a canteen and is near shops, the A3, Tolworth station, and is a bus ride from Surbiton station, with fast connections to Clapham Junction and London Waterloo.

Job description Job responsibilities

The role is based on Ellis Ward at Tolworth Hospital. The ward team consists of a Consultant Psychiatrist (this post), two junior doctors, a Ward Manager, RMNs, HCAs, a band 6 occupational therapist, a psychologist, a discharge coordinator, and a team administrator.

The post holder will take responsibility for all the patients who are being treated on the ward. Patients will be admitted from all the 5 boroughs that the Trust serves, and there will be close working between the ward, the Home Treatment Teams, the Community Mental Health Teams and Early Intervention Teams in managing patient care and discharge.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • -Primary Medical degree.
  • oFull GMC registration
  • -MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • -Included on the GMC Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry or eligible for such inclusion on the Specialist Registrar within three months of completing their CST.
  • -Section 12 (2)/AC approval under the Mental Health Act or be willing to apply for such approval once in post.
Desirable
  • Qualification in a talking therapy such as CBT, DIT or MBT
  • Qualifications in change management and service development skills
Knowledge Essential
  • -Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme.
  • -A detailed knowledge of the Mental Health Act, the functions of the Mental Health Review Tribunals and Hospital Managers' Hearings
Desirable
  • -Knowledge and experience of risk assessment and risk management
  • -Experience of teaching medical and non-medical staff, including those who may not have a formal qualification
Teaching Essential
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry
Desirable
  • Teaching Qualification
