We can offer a bespoke introduction and training in Children's and Young People's Mental Health Services that will enhance your knowledge and skills in risk assessments of young people.

Main duties of the job

CAMHS Crisis Care Practitioners provide brief clinical risk and mental health assessment, formulation and short-term contingency planning for children and young people presenting in mental health crisis. To provide short term, intensive mental health intervention for children and adolescents with complex mental health need.

You will work collaboratively with other Mental Health Services across the system as well as Acute Hospitals, Ambulance Service, the Police, Education and Social Care to provide risk and mental health assessment, formulation and contingency planning for children and young people presenting in Crisis.

  • Provide evidence based clinical interventions, making autonomous clinical decisions about own professional practice.
  • Responsibility for the development, planning and implementation of brief care and treatment interventions for individual children and young people.
  • Provide assessment, planning and implementation of individual packages of care and treatment.
  • Ensure that individual episodes of care are delivered in a timely, effective and integrated manner.
  • Provide Supervision to Band 4 Crisis Support Workers
  • Promote a recovery model that empowers patients, carers and relatives to be at the forefront of decision making and ownership of their packages of care and treatment.
  • Undertake clinical risk assessments, based on latest empirical evidence and compliant with local policies and procedures.
  • Act as the patients and relatives advocate.
  • Enable patients and carers to manage disability, loss and change
  • Champion patients rights, including: dignity, equality, diversity, choice and respect.
  • When undertaking all of the above ensure good documentation is provided and entered within the appropriate systems of record sharing. Support Audit of clinical record keeping.
  • CAMHS Crisis Care Practitioners will provide brief clinical risk and mental health assessment, formulation and short-term contingency planning for children and young people presenting in mental health crisis to A&E and in accordance with the operational policy.


  • Person Specification Education/Qualifications Essential
    • Mental Health Nurse/Social work qualification or Registered Nurse with CAMHS experience
    • Current NMC/HCPC Registration appropriate to the job role
    • Evidence of continuing professional development
    Desirable
    • Clinical supervision qualification
    • Specific training in either family work or psychological approaches to helping young people
    • Teaching (clinical practice)
    Experience Essential
    • Willingness to engage in work with children, young people and families who require or who are accessing mental health services
    • Experience of working with people presenting in mental health crisis
    • Experience of risk assessment and management
    • Multi-agency working/working across service interfaces
    • Working within a multicultural framework
    Desirable
    • Previous experience of working in a CAMHS or other child and adolescent community or inpatient setting which may be relevant to the post
    • Teaching, training and/or supervision of clinical staff
    Knowledge & Skills Essential
    • Assessing, formulating and working with children and young people (& their families) presenting in heightened state of distress
    • Communicating (oral and written) complex/highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
    • Clinical risk assessment and contingency planning/ management plans
    • The ability to demonstrate excellent clinical skills relevant to the clinical area
    • A positive approach and energy to working with young people and their families in promoting recovery and resilience
    • Able to demonstrate commitment to high quality care and service provision
    • IT skills
    • Able to meet the service needs for mobility across the geographical area covered
    • An understanding of the principles of working with children, young people and their families
    • Knowledge of current research and evidence based practice in clinical work relevant to the job role/services
    • Models of care and treatment relevant to working with children and young people in mental health crisis
    • Relevant specialist clinical courses/training
    • Evidence of continuing professional development. Sound knowledge of Mental Health Act, Care Act, Mental Capacity Act
