We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and skilled Band 6 Senior Clinical Nurse (RMN, night shifts) to join our Adult Inpatient Mental Health wards. In return for your commitment and enthusiasm, working within the unique Adult 3-3-3 inpatient system will give you the opportunity to practice a full range of core mental health nursing skills and to also teach, supervise and support colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The ideal candidate will have a commitment to teamwork, a sense of accountability, plus an ability to work under pressure.

The post holder will provide quality evidence-based nursing advice, support and care for service users with mental and physical health needs and to their carers within a multidisciplinary setting.

You will be responsible for leading on the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care on night shifts, and will have a good level of knowledge of local, national policies and legislation which govern current service provision.

The post holder will be responsible for identifying and contributing to the training needs of junior registered and unregistered staff and ensure that issues of equality, diversity and rights are dealt with in accordance with good practice and legislation.

You will ensure that effective communication pathways exist, and act within your sphere of responsibility, leading the night shift in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Specialist, Ward Manager or the designated deputy.

To be responsible for supervising the role of the named nurses in relation to care planning within the clinical area.
  • To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the evidence based care required, including health promotion for a named service user/group ensuring it meets Trust timescales.
  • To participate in the setting of quality standards, including the monitoring and reviewing in line with current clinical guidance practice and policy. Utilising the data available such as learning from incidences and complaints.
  • To understand and meet professional role and responsibilities under the Care Programme Approach.
  • To ensure that the requirements of the Mental Health Act 2007 are observed, adhered to and implemented.
  • To be responsible for the promotion of carer and service user involvement within the service and for its provision. To encourage recovery, discovery and independence, taking into account risk assessment and management.
  • To be responsible for establishing therapeutic relationships with service users, and the implementation of evidence based therapeutic interventions with appropriate boundaries in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Councils professional code of conduct.
  • To ensure the provision of a safe, therapeutic environment conducive to wellbeing and recovery.

    • Registered Nurse Mental Health (RNMH) or other specialism relating to post such as Registered Nurse Learning Disability (RNLD)
    • Completion of SSSA/Mentorship Course
    • NMC registration

    • Post graduate qualification related to ward
    Experience Essential
    • Experience of inpatient services and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
    • Experience of supervising staff
    • Experience of providing mentorship
    • Experience of dealing with service users with complex mental health needs

    • Previous experience of undertaking Continuing Care Assessments
    • Experience of developing service user and carer involvement
    Knowledge and Understanding Essential
    • Ability to build effective working relationships with staff across a wide range of professional and managerial groups
    • Ability to carry out physical interventions
    • Knowledge of physical healthcare needs
    • Understanding of the legislation relating to care including - Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Act, Children's Act, Equality Act 2010, Health and Safety Act and the Data Protection Act
    • Awareness of safeguarding issues and responsibilities under relevant legislation edge of NICE guidance

    • Ability to present complex information to various audiences
    OTHER Essential
    • Ability to undertake a minimum of 1 hour of supervision per month (either face to face or virtual)
    • Ability to undertake a minimum of one 7-hour Keeping in Touch (KIT) shift per quarter during daytime hours, i.e., early/late/day shift
