An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic newly qualified professional to join our Managing Risk Pathway. We are looking for a Band 5, Newly Qualified CAMHS Mental Health Practitioner to join our experienced, knowledgeable and friendly team.

Devon CAMHS crisis services for children and young people is changing and for the better! This includes vital expansion and transformation of our urgent care services for children and young people who experience mental health crisis.

You will be part of an existing multi-disciplinary team, who are focused on ensuring children and young people get the right help, when they need it the most. You will have a shared commitment to learning and development which we are committed to enhancing with training opportunities to support our delivery of care. In models such as AMBIT and DBT, to name but a few.



Main duties of the job

The team currently offer urgent assessments in hospital, or in the community, with a drive to ensure there is no health without mental health. We are proud to offer intensive support at home, with the young people and their network, actively working with our partner agencies in preventing children and young people being admitted into hospital. We operate shifts between 9am-10pm, 7 days per week, on a rota basis, so that our service is accessible and flexible.

This post is a great opportunity for a newly qualified professional to gain experience working with children and young people with complex mental health needs in the community. We know that moving from student to qualified professional can be an exciting but scary time, and we therefore offer a full programme to support this transition through preceptorship.

£27,055 - £32,934 per annum pro rata (Band 5).

About us

Children and Family Health Devon (CFHD) comprises an Alliance of six NHS organisations working together to improve health outcomes for children and young people in Devon. We are working closely with other organisations and providers to ensure to deliver locality-placed based, integrated access to all of our services, based on the i-Thrive Framework, in response to wide-ranging consultation with our service users and communities.

CFHD works closely with our local universities of Plymouth, Exeter & the Peninsula Medical School where we support students in clinical training placements and in addition support our own staff to undertake post graduate training. We actively engage service users and their families in co-design which is facilitated by a dedicated young persons lead role who also works closely with Young Devon who provide additional co-design and feedback through the Devon young peoples champions group.

The post holder will deliver high quality mental health services. The role involves managing a defined caseload. The focus will be providing continuous assessment and evidence-based treatment for children and young people with complex mental health difficulties and their parents or carers. The liaison with a wide range of statutory and non-statutory agencies is central to this role. The post holder will be an effective member of the multi-disciplinary team.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • An appropriate up to date professional mental health nursing qualification.
  • Registered RMN with the NMC.
  • Evidence of relevant continuing professional development
Desirable
  • Training to level 2 in Safeguarding Adults and level 3 in Safeguarding children and young people: roles and competencies for Health Care staff
  • Post registration training in relevant field
  • Mentorship training
Experience Essential
  • Post graduate experience working within mental health environments or willingness to complete the DPT preceptorship programme
Desirable
  • Experience managing a caseload of clients with a range of mental health problems.
  • Demonstrates sound theoretical knowledge of childrens and young peoples mental health practice
  • Working within a community setting in either the statutory or voluntary sector.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency environment.
Knowledge and skills Essential
  • An understanding of the Mental Health Act/ Mental Health Capacity Act requirements.
  • An understanding of CPA Process.
  • Understanding of child protection and the importance of multi-agency work for children and families in the community.
  • An understanding of child development.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to engage with children/young people of all ages experiencing a wide range of mental health presentations.
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of professionals from various settings.
  • Group work skills
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and experiences of using these with children, young people and families.
  • Knowledge and experience of gaining meaningful feedback from children, young people and families voice and inform meaningful change.
  • Experience of working in a person-centred way which shows you can demonstrate values that are important to children, young people and families.
  • Knowledge and understanding of what children, young people and families feel is important to them and their lives.
  • Ability to assess risk and develop plans to manage risk.
  • Able to prioritise work to reflect changing needs.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to be mobile across a geographical area.
