The National Deaf CAMHS team in the South West has an exciting opportunity for someone to join our team as a Band 5 Assistant Psychologist. This is a new post to support the clinical psychologist in the team, and will be a full time, fixed-term post for 12 months.
The National Deaf CAMHS team is a supportive bicultural and bilingual team of clinicians and support workers. Our team is psychology led and we have a mix of deaf and hearing colleagues who work with deaf young people and children of deaf adults, with mental health concerns. You don't have to know British Sign Language to work with us, we train everyone in our team in BSL (paid and in work time) and use a large group of interpreters to support our clinical work. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team including Clinical Psychology, Psychiatry, Specialist Practitioners and Family Support Workers.
This is an exciting time to join our team and inform positive change. We are currently participating in national service development projects to develop trauma-informed service strategies, a nationwide autism pathway, and pathways for young people affected by language deprivation.
The team operates mainly core hours 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Travel across the region is a requirement of the post, as a commitment to learn British Sign Language.
Main duties of the job
We work closely with local teams across our patch, but also with our colleagues in the other National Deaf CAMHS teams. There is a wide range of training available in this role and plenty of opportunity to support service development and research both locally and nationally. The role will be varied, with the opportunity to work with all our colleagues to provide specialist assessment, formulation and intervention to deaf young people. There will be opportunities to carry out some direct clinical and psychometric assessments under supervision. Regular clinical and management supervision will be provided from within the team.
The team is based in Foundation House in Taunton and covers the whole of the South West region. We encourage hybrid working, and our staff work from home, with regular travel to schools, colleges, and other bases across the South West.
We are looking for individuals with transferrable skills and mental health experience who can develop within the role. Our caseload is complex and specialised, so previous experience as an assistant psychologist is essential. Experience of working in CAMHS, children's social care, learning disability services, or working with the Deaf community would be an advantage; and the ability to generalise existing skills is of primary interest. A large part of your work will be managing referrals, liaising with professionals, and supporting qualified staff; so the ability to work confidently and autonomously is also important.
About us
As an organisation, the NHS offers a wide range of benefits including flexible working, pension contributions, market leading annual leave allowance, career progression and regular conversations, not to mention our Blue Light Card and NHS exclusive discounts.
The benefits of working in Somerset include the idyllic countryside, with our areas of outstanding beauty and stunning coastlines. You will get to enjoy these perks whilst still only being a stone's throw away from bustling city centres like Bristol, Bath and Exeter and only two hours away from London.
There are excellent educational facilities in the area and, when compared to other regions, house prices are reasonable. You will experience the best of both in Somerset, the countryside and the cosmopolitan - there is truly something for everyone!
