The Liaison Psychiatry Service based at Cambridge University Hospital (Addenbrookes) have a rare opportunity for 2 permanent WTE (37.5 hours per week) band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialists / Mental Health Professionals to join their brand new Alcohol Care Team (ACT) service, which is an extension of our already established Substance Misuse Team.

The liaison psychiatry service is highly regarded nationally and is accredited through the Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network (PLAN). The service consists of highly skilled psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists and well-being practitioners.

Main duties of the job

To work within the drug and alcohol team, based within the liaison psychiatry service at Cambridge University hospital. (CUH)

To work across a 7-day, 9-5 service with the primary focus of supporting patients admitted to the Emergency Department (ED) at CUH, with significant alcohol issues, requiring community support upon their discharge.

• To review patients and identify those with alcohol related attendance and admission
• Provide brief advice and refer to appropriate community support for patients who can be discharged from the ED
• Carry an appropriate case load of patients with alcohol dependency admitted to CUH
• To complete a comprehensive alcohol assessment for patients requiring admission to CUH and provide support throughout the admission
• To work with the Band 7 and Alcohol Care Team to deliver specialist alcohol nursing care to a case load of patients
• Liaise with medical staff and contribute to the plan of care
• To provide interventions which includes motivational interviewing, relapse prevention medication, medication to prevent alcohol related brain injury and refer for appropriate mental health assessments
• Contribute to the safe discharge planning of patients which includes referral to appropriate community support services whilst developing strong networks with the community teams following MDT meetings
• Contribute to Trust wide education and training to all grades of staff in relation to alcohol
• To work in partnership with the Liver Specialist Nurses across sites to support the current plan of care
• Advise and help manage patients requiring medically assisted alcohol withdrawal as an inpatient and provide education to staff groups about pharmacological management of withdrawal including CIWA
• Form working networks within the hospital to aid and support care of patients with alcohol related problems.
• Participate in Steering and Working Groups across the acute Trust to ensure a proactive approach to service users mental health.

Person Specification Education / Qualifications Essential

• Registered Mental Health Nurse or equivalent professional registration
• Evidence of relevant post registration training and development

Desirable

• Independent and supplementary Prescriber
• Recognised training qualification
• Mentor and mentorship training

Experience Essential

• Significant years of registration experience in working with people with alcohol dependence.
• Experience in alcohol misuse service delivery within hospital and/or primary care settings
• Knowledge base in the provision of substance misuse and preferred treatment methods with a recovery focused agenda
• Experience of effective collaborative working
• Evidence of Interdisciplinary / multi-agency working experience

Desirable

• Experience working within liaison teams/general hospitals
• Clinical audits and research

• Experience of engaging frequent attenders who can be hard to reach, complex and more resistant to treatment.

• Good understanding of issues relating to alcohol/substance misuse
• Knowledge of person-centred care and its application
• Knowledge of psychosocial interventions and their appropriate use
• Specialist knowledge of medication and the monitoring of its effect
• Good knowledge of the policies and guidelines pertinent to the planning and delivery of care to adults with alcohol and substance misuse

• Knowledge of practical application and use psychological approaches
