This Specialty Doctor post in Adult Psychiatry is located in the Peterborough area of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will work with the Consultant Psychiatrist primarily to provide medical input to the Crisis Team community-based services within the North area of Cambridgeshire. Specialty doctor will cover Crisis Team Peterborough.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the evidence-based management of Home Treatment Team within the designated catchment area of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.
  • To cover Crisis Team North and to participate handover meetings, business and governance meetings, and to provide support to the CRHTT staff and colleagues.
  • To work with the multidisciplinary specialist teams and share responsibility with them for day-to-day management of the services.
  • Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students and other disciplines.
  • To actively participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance, audit and research.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).

Job description Job responsibilities

The North Crisis Resolution/Home Treatment Team (CRHTT) is a service set up to respond to and support adults that are experiencing a severe mental health problem which could lead to an inpatient admission to a psychiatric hospital. The main aim of the CRHTT is to help to manage and resolve crisis through assessment and treatment in home environment as an alternative to hospital admission. We also support people being discharged from psychiatric hospital, enabling them to continue patients recovery at home.

The team covers those who live in Peterborough/Fenland and Huntingdon.

Since the beginning of 2008, Peterborough has joined the functional model, which means the successful applicant will only work for the acute Services in Peterborough. The Specialty Doctor will provide Crisis Team and Treatment Ward medical cover and aims are to treat patients entering the secondary mental health care who are likely to be returned to their normal functioning within approximately 2-3 weeks. Supervision and training from the Consultant Psychiatrists will be provided.

The post holder will:
  • Assess newly referred patients to Crisis Team who are either referred from the community services, wards, FRS or from Liaison Psychiatry Peterborough city hospital.
  • Provide the medical input and support as per Job Plan
  • Patients who need home treatment will be reviewed regularly to make a follow-up plan
  • Risk assess patients who are in the community and plan further management
  • Attend routine handovers and team meetings
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Work collaboratively with other mental health services and external agencies including primary care, Secondary care community services, social care, police, secondary care physical health services and voluntary services.
  • Actively participate in local and trust wide educational activities. The services regularly have medical student attachments and involvement in teaching is encouraged.
  • The post holder will be expected to take part in regular supervision, annual appraisal and annual job planning.

Other responsibilities

If the post holder proves to be both successful and committed at Specialty Doctor Level, there is the possibility of further career development. All career grade doctors are required to maintain their education, professional development and accreditation. Appropriate time and financial support is available for this purpose. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.

Person Specification Education/Qualifications Essential
  • Full GMC registration and licence to practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Eligible for approval under Section 12 of the MHA 1983
Desirable
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
Entry criteria for the grade Essential
  • Completed minimum of 4 years full-time postgraduate training (or equivalent) of which 2 will be in a specialty training programme in psychiatry or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
Experience Essential
  • Proven experience of good working relationships
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working
Skills/Knowledge/Ability Essential
  • Knowledge of policy and legislation relating to mental health
  • Ability to make decisions and carry out responsibilities without direct supervision
  • Ability to take a clinical lead under the supervision of the Consultant
  • Ability to travel
