A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for 2 Speech and Language Therapists to join our prison mental health services in Hull HMP and Humber HMP. This follows Tees Esk & Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust being awarded the contract to provide these prisons mental health services and as such we are looking to extend the multi-disciplinary team. We are looking for 2 Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) to work with both Hull and Humber HMP mental health teams and to work in the integrated support unit at Hull HMP (in-patient unit for men with moderate or severe mental illness).
These post-holders will join the teams and the Trust at an exciting time of development and will focus on delivering high quality, evidence-based services. The post holders should be motivated by the opportunity to become part of the growing workforce in this SLT provision. They will be responsible for leading, shaping and developing these roles by demonstrating excellence in clinical care, providing training to the team and promoting a culture of evidence-based practice and person-centred care.
Main duties of the job
The post holders will have a degree in Speech and Language Therapy and have significant experience working in mental health or learning disability services and complex needs. They will have knowledge of related issues and national directives and an understanding of the criminal justice system would be beneficial. They will be expected to facilitate and promote the wider understanding of and utilisation of SLT within mental health care and the prison population.
The post holder will become a member of an innovative multi-disciplinary team and be part of a dynamic SLT Mental Health and Learning Disability service. They will receive robust professional and managerial supervision as well as peer support and CPD opportunities. They will liaise closely with the SLT's in the NE Prison mental services and community health and justice services.
The post will be subject to Police/ Prison vetting.

Aims:
- Improved access to healthcare and support services for vulnerable individuals
- To improve communication with individual and their supporters by providing communication advice and strategies in relevant format
- To raise awareness and improve the workforces knowledge and skills in SLC needs
- To provide relevant and meaningful therapy input where appropriate
- To reduce re-offending or escalation of offending behaviours
Objectives:
- To provide an exemplary and comprehensive assessment of SLCN for all eligible referred individuals
- To work as an integrated multidisciplinary team
- To operate within a robust clinical operating framework
- To provide high quality advice to key agencies in Prison teams including mental health staff, Prisoner Officers, Alcohol and Drug Recovery agencies, Education and Employment services and Probation

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
- Registration with HCPC
- Post-graduate training in specialist areas relevant to the role e.g. Intensive Interaction, Talking Mats, Dysphagia, Autism etc (or willingness to achieve within agreed timescale)
- Clinical Supervisory Skills course.
- Trust training in Appraisal and Recruitment (within an agreed timescale)
- Numeracy, Literacy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent
- Membership of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
- Post graduate dysphagia training and experience in relevant clinical area
- Experience of working with adults with LD and/or MH difficulties
- Experience of teaching/training
- Experience of providing clinical supervision
- Post graduate dysphagia training
- Experience of working in a MDT
- Experience of supervising students
- Experience in prison setting / forensic setting
- National guidance and key standards in own specialist area
- Clinical Risk Assessment and Management and its application in practice.
- Awareness of personality disorder /OPD pathway
- Knowledge of communication difficulties and impact on offender health
