As a result of service expansion there is an exciting opportunity to apply for the role of Neurodiversity Lead within HMP Woodhill. It is widely recognised that there is a significant prevalence of people within the criminal justice system with diagnosed or undiagnosed neurodevelopmental disorder. Within the Health and Justice directorate of CNWL there is a move to adapt and expand services to meet the needs of this population. This rewarding post has been created to ensure that men with autistic spectrum conditions, ADHD, intellectual disability or acquired brain injury receive good healthcare to meet their needs. This vital role will include contributing to the development of the service and promoting awareness and understanding of neurodiversity within the prison.

Vaccination

The successful applicant will be an NHS employee and may therefore have contact with vulnerable service users. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been necessary to take significant steps to protect the health and safety of our staff, service users and those attending our sites. In order to comply with our duty of care, we require our staff to have the COVID vaccine and we will ask for proof of vaccination during the recruitment process. Vaccination will be a condition of employment unless an exemption applies

Main duties of the job

  • To lead in the identification and support of people with Neurodevelopmental Disorders, including Autism, Attention deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities within the prison establishment.


  • To provide, and support others to offer adapted psychosocial interventions for people whose communication, thinking style and coping strategies are impacted by the presence of a ND.


  • To hold a caseload of people who are identified to have needs associated with neurodevelopmental disorders.


  • To advocate for people with neurodiversity disorders within the prison system and promote best practice and the safety and wellbeing of patients with Neurodevelopmental Disorders.


  • To work alongside other ND practitioners, in similar roles, working in other prisons.


  • To be supported by your clinical lead to improve the outcomes of people with ND across in all of the prisons served by CNWL, delivering against the national specifications for primary and mental healthcare for people with Neurodevelopmental Disorders.


  • To foster and maintain the high standards of care.


  • To lead on aspects of clinical governance / care quality.


  • To deputise in the absence of line manager.


  • To play an active part in the Healthcare Management Team


  • Recognise that there is need for flexibility, working outside of normal working hours if required, including weekends.


  • To participate in Healthcare Management on-call rota

  • To monitor the team operational policy, ensuring that this is reviewed at regular intervals, and is current.


  • To contribute to the delivery of Mental Health Awareness training for all prison staff.


Person Specification Education and Qualifications Essential
  • oRegistered nurse, Mental Health / Learning Disability or Registered Occupational Therapist or Speech and Language Therapist Further specialist knowledge, post registration qualification/significant post registration experience or other formal training.
  • oEvidence of professional development since registration
Desirable
  • oPost registration qualification that enhances clinical work: CBT, DBT, Dual Diagnosis, etc.
  • oManagement Qualification
  • oTeaching and assessing qualification.

  • oCurrent registration
Previous Experience Essential
  • oClinical experience of the assessment, treatment or support of people who have Autism, ADHD and or Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities in health or social care settings
  • oExperience of prioritising patients who have complex needs
  • oExcellent organisational skills and an ability to work with deadlines and to manage time effectively
  • o Experience of contributing to the formulation or differential diagnosis of individuals with ASD, ADHD and or IDD, where mental illness may also be present.
  • oExperience of supervising and appraising staff Experience of working and contributing to organisations as part of a wider Multiagency Team (e.g. CPA)
  • oExperience of working with people whose communication skills are impacted upon by neurodevelopmental disorders and where reasonable adjustments need to be made
  • oRisk assessment and management skills.
  • oExcellent communication skills both verbal and written with the ability to listen, rationalize and conclude calmly offering reassurance to the team when required.
Desirable
  • oExperience of working in a Prison or secure/forensic environment
  • oExperience of working with mentally disordered offenders;
  • oTraining and experience in investigating complaints.
  • oParticipation in research issues and with the clinical governance agenda
  • oExperience of using sensory approaches to address distress or to modulate arousal
  • oTraining in ADOS, ADI-R, DISCO diagnostic assessments
  • oTraining in positive behavioural support (PBS)
  • oExperience in the delivery of CBT/DBT informed interventions and how to adapt or adjust to suit the needs of people with neurodevelopmental disorder
Skills and knowledge Desirable
  • oAbility to work effectively as part of a team and independently as appropriate
  • oTo use supervision positively and effectively
  • oKnowledge of the needs and rights of patients
  • oKnowledge of CPA, Mental Health Act, MAPPA, legislation and policies relevant to prison mental health.

  • oAbility to engage in evidence based practice, with an understanding of care quality (clinical governance).
