An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and energetic Speech and Language Therapist join the community speech and Language Therapy team in North Cumbria covering Allerdale. There may be a need at times to travel across North Cumbria to support the community Speech and language Therapy service across the Trust.

There will be opportunities to work with a mixed caseload including voice, dysfluency, elderly frail, acquired neurological disorders and stroke. There will also be an opportunity to develop acute swallow competencies if this is desired.

The North Cumbria Speech and Language Therapy team is a small, friendly, supportive team with good opportunities for ongoing training. We have a well-developed supervision and peer support system in place.

The post holder will be part of a small, friendly, enthusiastic team with close links with ICC teams and third sector. The department has a robust appraisal and supervision structure with opportunities for clinical and management development.

Disclosure and Barring Service:

The Trust is committed to safeguarding adults and children therefore if the post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended) the successful candidate(s) will be subject to a criminal records check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The cost of the DBS must be met by the successful candidate(s) through salary deduction. DBS charges are as follows if applicable to the post:

Standard Check: £18 + Administration cost of £3.85 = £21.85. Deducted at £6.85 from 1st month salary and £5 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Enhanced Check: £38 + administration cost of £3.90 = £41.90. Deducted at £11.90 from 1st month salary and £10 deducted from salary over following 3 months.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy approved by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
  • Registered with HCPC
  • On-going membership with the RCSLT
  • Evidence of formal training/self-study/ specialist experience to post graduate level in dysphagia
Desirable
  • oCaseload specific training e.g. elderly frail/dysfluency/acquired neurological disorders
Experience Essential
  • Experience of organising, managing and prioritising a clinical caseload
  • Experience of working as part of a MDT
  • Experience of working with other professionals and agencies.
  • Experience of assessment and management of swallowing
  • Delivering training to others e.g. carers and other AHPs
  • Experience of working within community in a variety of settings
Knowledge Essential
  • RCSLT code of conduct and professional standards.
  • Knowledge of current clinical procedures
  • Good working knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and SLT role in the process
  • Clinical governance as it affects clinical practice, in line with national and local drivers
  • Knowledge of Feed at Risk issues and the role of SLT in this process
  • Knowledge of local and national guidelines relevant to community caseload and how they relate to SLT practice.
  • Specialist knowledge of swallowing and communication disorders within adult population
  • Specialist knowledge of therapy techniques within adult population
  • To demonstrate a breadth of specialist knowledge with decision making underpinned by current evidence
Skills & Aptitudes Essential
  • Ability to carry out and analyse results of various assessments appropriate for different clients, relating to age, disorder, standardisation, etc
  • IT ability, including word processing, presentation skills, ability to access software packages and ability to effectively use telemedicine.
  • Negotiation and problem solving ability, in order to prioritise for assessment and intervention
  • Skills in motivation of clients and/or carers to engage in the therapeutic process.
  • Willingness to learn and be a reflective practitioner
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent time management, organisational and administration skills
  • Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment, diagnosis and management within a mixed community caseload

  • Able to travel independently of public transport
  • To be able to travel across North Cumbria as required to support the delivery of a county wide Speech and Language Therapy community service if required.
