We are currently recruiting for a multiple number of Trust Grade doctors in Broadmoor Hospital. The ideal candidate will have the drive, enthusiasm and vision to join our High Secure service in Broadmoor Hospital.

Broadmoor Hospital is a trainee hub, with links to the Oxford, Charing Cross and St Mary's training schemes. Significant opportunities are available for teaching, audit/QI, research and leadership experience, depending on the interests of the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

The doctor will be responsible for contributing to the day to day management of up to 20 patients under the supervision of the consultant. The doctor will additionally undertake on call duties which will involve attendance at all wards within the hospital. General clinical duties of the post include: -
  • he assessment and management of the patients on the ward.
  • The assessment of patients referred to the ward.
  • Performing physical examinations and the organisation of clinically indicated physical investigations.
  • The on-going assessment and management of the inpatients including contributing to multidisciplinary reviews.
  • Participation in CPA meetings and relevant documentation.
  • Liaising with other Professionals.
  • The preparation of Psychiatric reports.
  • Occasional cross cover.

On-call and cover arrangements
  • ost holder will participate in the day time and out of hours on call rota which operates within a shift system within Broadmoor Hospital. On call work is supported from time to time by a Higher Trainee and always a Consultant.

    Induction

    All doctors must attend an induction programme at the start of the post. It is also a requirement to maintain necessary mandatory training including in areas such as breakaway, basic life support, CPA and child protection.

    Psychotherapy

    The hospital has two part-time consultant psychotherapists. Dr Adshead runs Balint session on Monday and Dr Minne on a Thursday.

    Academic Programmes & CPD

    The doctor will be welcome to participate in the Monday afternoon academic programme. The programme includes a supervised Critical Review Session (Journal club), lectures, case presentations and seminars organised by the Medical Education Committee.

    A mock CASC exam (with simulated scenarios and both individual and group feedback) also takes place on Fridays.

    Library

    A Medical Library, located at the Learning and Development Centre outside the external perimeter is available during office hours.

    A bench library of key texts is available in the on-call facilities.

    Clinical audit, quality improvement and research

    There are opportunities available for audit / QI and research within the hospital.

    Secretarial support and office facilities The service has a dedicated secretary. An allocated desk and computer with internet access will be provided in the ward MDT office.

    Management

    There is no formal management component to the post. The doctor will be encouraged to familiarise themselves with clinical and operational policies and procedures relevant to their service and their clinical and professional duties.

    Clinical Supervision
    Clinical supervision is provided by the consultant psychiatrist. In the absence of the consultant this will be provided by the covering consultant


Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Primary Medical Degree.
  • Full registration with the GMC.
Desirable
  • MRCPsych.
  • Higher qualifications.
  • Section 12(2) approval.
Qualifications Knowledge, Clinical expertise in specialty Essential
  • At least 1 year's full time post. GMC registration clinical experience (or equivalent gained on part time flexible basis).
  • A demonstrable interest in psychiatry.
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical problem solving in interdisciplinary areas
  • Possession of good organizational skills.
Desirable
  • Experience in Forensic Psychiatry.
Clinical audit Essential
  • Willingness to participate in clinical audit activities.
Personal Skills Essential
  • Willingness and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Willingness to work flexibly, adapting one's approach to the clinical situation and changing service provision.
  • Be able to actively listen and have excellent written and verbal communication skills
Desirable
  • Experience of management of change.
CPD Essential
  • Willingness to engage with the appraisal process.
Desirable
  • Registered with RCPsych CPD program.
Research Desirable
  • Publications.
