Specialty Doctor - Old Age Psychiatry - Bolton

This is a replacement post and is offered on a part time basis. The post is based at Breightmet Health Centre, Bolton. The successful candidate will work alongside a Consultant Psychiatrist and other health professionals in the Old Age Community Mental Health Team and Memory Assessment and Treatment Service.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will work in Old Age Psychiatry services. This post is currently split Community and Memory Assessment and Treatment Service to allow development of the post holder's skills in both areas. The post holder will provide medical input to Bolton Older Adult's Community Mental Health team (4 Programmed Activities) and Bolton Memory Assessment service (4 Programmed Activities) depending on the individual training needs and service needs.


  • The post holder would spend 4 Programmed Activities working with the Older Adult Community Mental Health team. This work would involve assessment and management of older adults within Bolton who might have a range of mental health disorders of old age. The assessments may take place in residential or nursing homes, patients own homes or Breightmet Health Centre. In general, the post holder would see two new patients per Programmed Activity or up to five follow up patients. The Post holder would be an integral part of the community mental health team and would be supervised by Drs R Paranthaman/ U Patel, sector Community Old Age Psychiatry Consultants.


  • Work within the Memory Assessment service in Bolton would involve the post holder assessing patients with other members of the memory assessment team as part of a diagnostic pathway for dementia.

The post holder would use the structured memory assessment clinic assessment schedule and be supervised by Drs K Harrison/ A Seabourne for these assessments. In general, the post holder would see two new patients per Programmed Activity or five follow up patients. These assessments may be done at Breightmet Health centre or Lever Chambers which is a Health Centre in Bolton town centre or patients own homes.


Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • GMC registration with license to practice
  • Section 12 (2) Approval under Mental Health Act 1983 or be eligible for approval within 6 months
Knowledge Essential
  • Good working knowledge of the interface between the MCA and MHA
