An exciting opportunity has arisen for two motivated and enthusiastic Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our Community Mental Health Services in Sandwell.

Job Purpose
  • To manage a caseload of people with mental health difficulties using the Model of Human Occupation and recovery focused principles to assess, plan, implement, formulate and evaluate interventions in Sandwell and Wolverhampton community mental health teams.
  • To develop and deliver a varied programme of Occupational Therapy, psychotherapeutic, psychosocial therapeutic groups and individual activities designed to meet the identified needs of service according to the principles of Recovery and rehabilitation. To assist in skills teaching and programming to empower patients to self-manage their own illnesses
  • To work as a senior member of a multidisciplinary team, providing advice to team members as required
  • To support leadership and provide clinical supervision to junior staff and students.
  • To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of OT services within Sandwell and Wolverhampton community mental health teams and also holding responsibility for defined OT projects.
  • To supervise OT students on practice placement.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Clinical
    • To act as an expert OT practitioner in rehabilitative Adult Mental Health care.
    • To maintain and prioritise a clinical caseload.
    • Based on the Model of Human Occupation, to provide OT assessment, treatment and advice to patients and to establish appropriate OT intervention programmes including 1:1 and group interventions using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.
    • To evaluate and modify treatment in order to measure progress.
    • To evaluate the outcomes of interventions.
    • To contribute towards the development and maintenance of therapeutic interventions, and delivery of OT Service
    • To contribute towards the assessment of carers needs.
  • Communication
    • To establish effective and robust communication networks with patients, carers and other colleagues within mental health services older people, voluntary agencies, and Social Services.
    • To promote awareness of the role of OT within the MDT and to external organisations and agencies where appropriate.
    • To participate in Team based meetings and patient reviews, contributing to decisions about patient programmes and discharge arrangements.
    • Liaison with wider Mental Health Team
    • Maintain working relationship with junior staff/students ensuring clear and effective communication
  • Documentation
    • To maintain written and electronic clinical case notes, group records and activity data in accordance with Professional Trust and Mental Health People standards.
    • To provide specialist OT reports relevant to clinical practice and student supervision.
  • Service Development
    • To champion the role of OT within Mental Health Services.
    • To manage designated projects as required by the OT Leads
    • To prepare and present tutorials for colleagues/universities.
    • To attend and actively contribute to OT and Team staff meetings and development days.
    • To participate in Team and OT audit and research projects.
    • To participate in the development of clinical pathways and protocols
    • Support and develop wider AHP team as required.
  • Professional Development and Training
    • To attend mandatory training.
    • To take responsibility for own CPD and to participate in PDR and supervision, reflecting on own practice and applying increasingly complex skills and knowledge in order to establish professional competence as a Senior OT.
    • To undertake supervision and PDR with junior staff.
    • To initiate, plan and implement the induction, training and education of OT students and other staff including band 5 OT
    • To be responsible for the supervision and written assessment of OT students on practice placement within the Trust.
    • To adhere to the RCOT Code of Ethics, Professional conduct and HPC standards.
  • Departmental
    • To monitor the use and storage of materials and equipment required to undertake therapeutic activities and advising on resource requirements.
    • To co-ordinate day to day activity of junior OT staff and Assistants where applicable.
    • To advise Senior OT staff and MDT staff / Team manager about untoward incidents.


    Person Specification Shortlisting Essential
    • Degree in Occupational Therapy (Or equivalent)
    • Evidence of post registration relevant to Mental Health practice
    • Ability to carry a case load of service users with complex and diverse needs in a mental health setting
    • Ability to work autonomously and set own priorities
    Desirable
    • Detailed knowledge of the principles of Clinical Governance and its application Experience of delivering presentations
    • Post Graduate clinical experience related to clinical fields
