Nurse Consultant in Learning Disability - 12-month secondment

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably experienced and qualified nurse to undertake a 12-month secondment as a Nurse Consultant for Learning Disability. This is a joint appointment between City, University of London (City), and East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT).

Main duties of the job

The School of Health and Psychological Sciences at City offers professional education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and incorporates a large Department of Nursing with around 1000 pre- and post-registration students. We are proud of our excellent relationships with partners and healthcare providers. ELFT provides a wide range of mental health, community health, primary care, wellbeing, and inpatient services to young people, working age adults, and older adults across the City of London, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Bedfordshire and Luton.

The purpose of the Nurse Consultant role is to provide a clinical expert resource, deliver evidence-based education, promote a positive learning environment for student nurses and post registration nurses, and influence research activities in the Learning Disabilities field. The post holder will spend 60% in clinical practice in ELFT and 40% in the School of Health and Psychological Sciences at City.

In summary, the role entails:
  • Providing clinical nurse leadership and an expert practice function in learning disabilities.
  • Providing advanced levels of theoretical and practical knowledge of learning disability and specialist practice across the Learning Disability Services and wider Trust services.
  • Working directly with people with complex needs related to their learning disability, providing expert advice and interventions alongside their place based allocated worker through the whole episode of care.
  • Delivering specialist education for Learning Disabilities at City, University of London to pre-registration nursing and nursing associate students, and students on post registration education programmes
  • Supporting the programme teams at City, University of London with curriculum development related to learning disability clinical skills and placement learning opportunities

  • Providing educational leadership for practitioners working with individuals with complex learning disability and specialist needs.
  • Leading or contributing to formal research programmes.
  • Working collaboratively with the Clinical Director for Learning Disability Services, and the Operational and Strategic Lead, to develop the evidence base for working with people who have a learning disability and the understanding of related research.
  • Promoting awareness of research and new evidential findings and advising colleagues on the impact of practice and implementation of such practice.
  • Providing clear lines of mentorship for colleagues and students undertaking research and evaluation activities, both at intermediate and advanced levels of academic practice
