An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Dental Therapist to join Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust Dental Services.

We are looking to appoint a part-time dental therapist to work on the exciting NIHR funded Mouth Matters in Mental Health Study. People with severe mental health difficulties often experience poor oral health and find it difficult to attend the dentist. This project aims to improve access to dental services in people with severe mental health difficulties to reduce oral health inequalities.

The post holder will conduct a dental examination in people with severe mental health difficulties as part of a research trial. The post holder will receive regular supervision and training from a multidisciplinary team that includes dentists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatric nurses. They will also support the dissemination of the project across mental health and dental services. This is an excellent opportunity to develop research and clinical skills. We are keen to support the ongoing career development of the post holder.

The post also includes the provision of care within the specialties of special care and paediatric dentistry including retained safety net patients (high street dentistry) where project duties allow.

Main duties of the job

This project aims to improve access to dental services in people with severe mental health difficulties. Our ultimate aim is to reduce oral health inequalities.

The post holder will conduct a dental examination in people with severe mental health difficulties as part of a research trial. The post holder will receive regular supervision and training from a multidisciplinary team that includes dentists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatric nurses. They will also support the dissemination of the project across mental health and dental services. This is an excellent opportunity to develop research and clinical skills. We are keen to support the ongoing career development of the post holder. The position is 0.6 FTE for 16 months and could be a secondment or fixed-term contract.
