Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, Band 6 Permanent, Full Time: 37.5 hours per week

Primary office base: Woolwich, London SE18

This great opportunity will enable you to:
  • Develop your clinical skills in working with adults with learning disabilities, including communication and dysphagia
  • Settle into a friendly Community Learning Disability Team as your working base, with support from a Band 7 SLT and the broader SLT team
  • Experience a range of ALD services within the directorate, which covers the boroughs of Greenwich, Bexley and Bromley
  • Engage with a varied and interesting caseload which will include those with autism, mental health issues and physical health issues in addition to their learning disability
  • Contribute to a well respected and innovative SLT service, which is committed to service development on a local and national level
  • Benefit from manageable caseload numbers, robust supervision and ample CPD opportunities
  • Enjoy close and supportive MDT working, guided by clinical care pathways within the ALD directorate
  • Become our service specialist in an area of particular interest, for example, AAC
  • Grow your leadership skills through supervising a Band 5 SLT Co-Worker and/or supporting students
  • Link in with our ALD directorate SLTs who offer specialist services in Mental Health, Education and Transition to Adulthood


Main duties of the job

We are looking for an SLT with:
  • Experience of and passion for working/interacting with people with learning disabilities - this could be as paid work, a student placement, a voluntary role, or within your social or family setting
  • Band 5 SLT experience with completed NQP competencies (recently qualified applicants with substantial relevant experience and knowledge might also be considered)
  • Enthusiasm for working collaboratively and holistically, with a person centred focus whilst including their carers as valued partners
  • Ability to travel to and work autonomously in a variety of community settings and manage your own diary
  • Interest in contributing to service development and your own specialist clinical area
  • Willingness to build on your dysphagia skills and knowledge

Overview of Post

To work as a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist within the Learning Disability Service, delivering high quality assessment and intervention to people with Learning Disabilities and their carers in accordance with the principles of Valuing People Now , Personalisation and RCSLT Five Good Communication Standards.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
  • To manage own caseload of clients with Learning Disabilities and with communication and/or eating and drinking difficulties
  • To line manage/clinically supervise SaLT Co-workers, SaLT Assistant and Specialist Support Workers as directed by Functional Team Manager and Professional Lead for ALD SaLT;
  • To deliver high quality Speech and Language Therapy assessment, diagnosis and intervention to people with Learning Disabilities in partnership with their families/carers;
  • To act as part of the multi-disciplinary Learning Disability teams and represent the Speech and Language Therapy Service at Team/Directorate meetings/working parties.
