Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology (CAAP) Programme Director (8c - 0.8 wte) and Senior CAAP Tutors (8b - 0.6 wte x 2). Honorary Cardiff University titles are available (dependent on experience).

On behalf of Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) Cardiff and the Vale University Health Board in collaboration with Cardiff University are seeking to appoint a Programme Director to lead a pilot of a new Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology (CAAP) MSc training programme. We are also seeking two CAAP Senior Tutors. The appointees will work alongside the existing Doctorate in Clinical Psychology staff team.Agenda for Change terms and conditions apply to these posts. The post holders would also be awarded an honorary Cardiff University academic post commensurate with their CV and would be expected to secure status as an honorary Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, or in exceptional circumstances as a Reader.

The successful applicants will have a DClinPsy or equivalent and be registered with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist. Accreditation with BABCP, AFT, or other recognised professional bodies would be advantageous. The successful candidate for the director role will have a solid background in managing NHS services or in contributing to the provision of clinical or applied psychology training. Ideally they will also have a track record in producing scholarly or/and research outputs.

Main duties of the job

Whilst these are part-time posts (8c - 0.8 wte; 8b 0.6 wte) we would assist successful candidates wishing to work full-time to find additional clinical sessions in one of the NHS Health Boards within South, Mid, or West Wales. The posts are offered either as a secondment or on a temporary contractual basis for a 36 month period. Continuation beyond that is dependent on the programme being re-commissioned.

The successful applicants will be joining an established and respected Clinical Psychology Doctorate team. This role involves close collaboration and partnership working with University and NHS colleagues, including Clinical Psychologists, Service Users and Carers, and other healthcare professionals.

The CAAPs programme will be based close to the centre of Cardiff, and will seek to build close links with health boards in Mid, West, and South Wales. Cardiff is a vibrant University and capitol city. It has excellent rail, air, and road links to the rest of the UK and to the beautiful countryside and coastal areas of Wales.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

  • To assume delegated responsibility for the systematic provision of a high quality MSc level Training Programmes delivering Clinical Associate Applied Psychology Practitioners (CAAPs adult/child) for Mid, South and West Wales.
  • To take lead responsibility for the day to day delivery of the CAAPs programmes.
  • To ensure that the programmes delivers to national and regional policies relevant to CAAPs.
  • To ensure that training is in line with agreed objectives underpinned by the requirements of The British Psychological Society (BPS), and Cardiff University as validating body for the award of MSc in CAAPs (adult) and CAAPs (child), and to establish how these objectives are interpreted and attained.
  • To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of CAAPs MSc programmes.
  • To provide leadership within the designated area of training (academic) of the Training Programme; to motivate staff and trainees.
  • To establish and maintain procedures that facilitate and appraise the development of trainee competence within the CAAPs MSc programmes and hence to prepare trainees after qualification for work within modern health and social care services.
  • To conduct autonomous teaching, research, development, academic and scholarship activity contributing to clinical psychology theory and practice, as a major job responsibility.
  • To assume delegated responsibility for establishing and maintaining procedures that examine trainee competence development in accordance with Cardiff University regulations and procedures.
  • To assume delegated responsibility for CAAPs MSc programmes staff and trainees and associated resources and to ensure that systems are in place and working effectively for the supervision and support of staff and trainees.
  • To assume delegated responsibility for ensuring clear systems for effecting recruitment, professional appraisal, and the identification of CPD needs within the CAAPs MSc programmes.

To provide a specialist clinical service, advice and consultancy to clients and professionals as directed by the Clinical Psychology Training Programmes Director.
