Corner House is an established National Specialist six-bed assessment and treatment Inpatient Unit for Deaf children and young people up to their 18th birthday, with moderate to severe complex emotional and psychological problems who require an admission. The MDT is made up of disciplines including psychiatry, psychology, nursing, family therapy and occupational therapy and all staff are skilled and experienced in understanding and treating deaf children and young people and their families.

The service offers consultation, assessment, and evidence-based interventions for deaf children and young people presenting with moderate to severe mental health conditions, including formulation, diagnosis, and recommendations for treatment upon discharge.

We are looking to recruit a senior psychologist with experience in leadership, service development and in-depth knowledge of mental health and deafness, including the ability to conduct complex psychological work with clients in BSL. Candidates who are not already training in BSL will be supported to undertake British Sign Language (BSL) level 2+ if not already achieved.

Main duties of the job

The Professional Lead will be responsible for co-ordination of:

• Clinical delivery including assessment, intervention, consultation and training
• Clinical Governance systems, including; safe and effective practice, demand and capacity management and supervision of staff
• Liaison with the relevant staff in the local authority, voluntary sector partners and education partners, to ensure close multi-agency working.

To provide highly specialist psychological assessments of children, young people and their families referred to the in-patient team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with children, young people, family members and others involved in the client's care.

To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a child or young person's mental health problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client's problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.

To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individual children and young people, carers, families and groups, within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.

To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.

To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans.

To provide specialist psychological advice guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to the formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan for children and young people.

To ensure that all members of the treating team have access to a psychologically based framework for understanding the care of young people admitted, through the provision of advice and consultation and the dissemination of psychological research and theory.

To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management.

To coordinate care, ensuring the provision of a care package appropriate for the young persons needs, coordinating the work of others involved with care, tasking responsibility for arranging reviews as required and communicating effectively with the young person, his/her family and all others involved in the network of care, and to monitor progress during the course of multi-disciplinary interventions. To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of young people admitted to the ward and to monitor and evaluate progress.

To provide expertise, advice, and support to facilitate the effective and appropriate provision of psychological care by all members of the treatment team.

Person Specification Training and Qualifications Essential

• Doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, as accredited by the BPS.
• Substantial experience of working as a qualified psychologist including experience of working at a highly specialist level with children and young people with a wide range of mental and behavioural disorders.
• Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, in-patient and residential care settings.
• Experience of teaching, training and professional and clinical supervision.

Desirable

• Post-doctoral/graduate training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice with children and young people
• Clinical training as part of a CYP IAPT collaborative in a recognised evidenced based approach i.e. CBT, Parenting Skills or other.

Experience Essential

• Demonstrable experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist including experience of working at a highly specialist level with children and young people with a wide range of mental and behavioural disorders
• Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, in-patient and residential care settings severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
• Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for the' psychological care and treatment of children and young people with serious mental illness, both as a professionally qualified care coordinator and also within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan.
• Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision.
• Experience of service development

• Experience of working with children and young people with eating disorders.
• Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care.
• Experience of assessing and treating children and young people with mental health needs across the full range of care settings, including in-patient services.

• High-level skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management in relation to children and young people with severe and complex mental physical and behavioural conditions
