An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time Consultant to join our Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) community team covering the North Cardiff area, based in the Llanfair Unit at University Hospital Llandough.

The role includes assessment and treatment of people over 65 years old with both functional (affective and psychotic disorders) and organic (neurodegenerative) illness, with frequent co-morbidity across both physical and mental health needs. Assessments occur in both the community (private homes or care homes) and hospital settings (outpatient, day hospital, acute assessment and extended assessment venues).

The appointee will be expected to work closely with other MHSOP services including Community REACT (crisis) team, Nursing & Residential Care Home Liaison Service, Younger Onset Dementia Service, Assessment and Recovery Unit and General Hospital Liaison Service. The post holder will regularly participate and contribute to weekly multi-disciplinary meetings.

The Consultant and team will input to in-patients across five wards. Admissions are prioritised by the clinical team and managed via the Patient Flow Team via a bed management system that the Consultant will input into.

Main duties of the job

Outpatient clinics are held weekly and are currently at University Hospital Llandough. Acute day hospital patients will be admitted to Assessment and Recovery Unit (ARU) at Llandough. The Care Home Liaison, REACT and Hospital Old Age Psychiatry Liaison Services will support in effective delivery of clinical care.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £82,356 per annum to £106,920 per annum plus a further £26,672 per annum available in Commitment Awards. Consultants in Wales paid on one of the first three points of the substantive Consultant pay scale also receive a Wales recruitment incentive payment.

Applicants must ensure they provide the names and contact details of referees covering at least the last three years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.
