South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust CAMHS service are delighted to offer a vacancy for an experienced staff nurse looking to progress to a Charge nurse position or a current Charge nurse looking to broaden their experience within CAMHS to join the Bethlem Adolescent Psychiatric Intensive Care Service (PICU) at the Bethlem Royal Hospital.
Historically young people requiring CAMHS PICU services in South London have had to go to other NHS and private units, often at great distances from home. Our PICU has been in operation since April 2018 and has been successful in keeping London young people closer to home as well as treating their acute mental health needs in a compassionate, safe and timely manner. The primary aim of the service is to treat young people to the degree where they can then return to a general adolescent unit to continue the pathway back to the community.
SLaM has the largest and most specialised CAMHS services in the country and is on the forefront of personalised support for young people and children. We want to recruit experienced nurses who have a real understanding of the needs of the CAMHS group, who can bring innovation and change to our growing services. Main duties of the job
The Bethlem Adolescent PICU is a newly established 8 bedded unit serving young people aged between 13-18 years from across South London and further afield, admitting some of the most unwell and vulnerable young people requiring secure mental health services.
In order to deliver the high quality of care we believe our young people deserve, we have recruited a full nursing team with high patient/staff ratios and in addition a multidisciplinary team which consists of Doctors, Clinical Psychologist, Systematic Family Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Activity Coordinators and education staff, to engage with young people and their families and provide the range of interventions they need in a full and diverse daily programme. The nursing team is at the centre of leading the unit and an integral part of the young people's recovery. To achieve this we require an experienced qualified nurse who can help lead and inspire the nursing team, who is willing to develop and enhance clinical skills.

As a clinical charge nurse you will take a role in planning clinical care, being part of the nursing team to employ your pre-existing clinical skills to help provide a therapeutic and safe environment. You will be an individual who would like to develop skills in an acute mental health setting and possess a calm and contained demeanor. You will develop confidence in assessing risk on a formal and informal basis and be able to balance this effectively with acting in the least restrictive way, fostering a safe yet therapeutic service. You will have a solid working knowledge of relevant legal frameworks i.e. MHA (1983), Capacity Act (2005) and the Children Act (1989).
You must be a qualified RMN, LD or Childrens Nurse with the desire to work in an in-patient mental health setting. It is essential to have an understanding of the challenges that face nurses caring for young people with mental health difficulties today and be able to demonstrate resilience and empathy. Most important to us is that you have a commitment and passion to want to listen and support young people in a variety of creative ways.
You will have the opportunity to continue enhancing your existing skills and become a specialist in CAMHS through our excellent learning and development opportunities which will include both leadership and managerial skills but also clinical interventions.
We are interested in recruiting nurses who are keen to work within CAMHS services and are not solely looking for candidates with prior CAMHs experience but who possess sound clinical skills and who demonstrate an interest of developing their career within CAMHS.
We actively encourage professional development and support our staff to take on additional training and academic qualification. Depending of relevance to the service there is the possibility of training or education being paid or by the organization.

- Registered Adult Nurse and/or Registered Mental Health Nurse and/or Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse
- Mentorship qualification
