The post holder will act as lead clinician in the area of specialist interventions for people living with dementia whose behaviour is challenging.

Referrals to the team are accepted for people living in care homes and those living in their own homes.

The successful candidate will take a lead role in the development of operational policies, advising on appropriate assessments, formulations and interventions of complex cases. They will also provide training and support for staff within the Mental Health Directorate, Social Services and third sector providers in person centred care planning for Older People who present challenging behaviour associated with mental health problems is another key purpose of this job.

The post holder will also supervise the work of less experienced psychologists, counsellors or other therapists (e.g. Nurse Therapist, Occupational Therapists).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act a the lead clinician in the Specialist Dementia Intervention Team (SDIT) to assess, formulate and offer effective interventions to people living with dementia and older people with mental health problems who present with behaviours that challenge.

They will also contribute to service developments increasing access to psychological therapies, and assist the clinical lead in the delivery, development and management of a significant service component by proposing and driving service development.

The post holder will need to apply advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of a range of psychological procedures and practices relevant to the treatment of care of people with complex needs.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Doctoral or equivalent professional training in applied psychology with significant supervised experience in adult mental health including complex cases
  • Knowledge and experience of clinical supervision in order to support qualified and trainee staff with regard to psychological therapy
  • Post qualified specialised training
  • Well developed knowledge of psychological issues facing patients with enduring mental health problems, as well as evidence base for psychological interventions
Desirable
  • Experience of multi-professional management within teams or services
  • Experience of supervising psychologists and practitioners from other professions (e.g. nursing, occupational therapy)
Experience Essential
  • Assessed experience of working as a qualified psychologist in roles involving complex clinical cases
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for patients psychological care and treatment, both as a coordinator of care and a therapist and within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan
