The team will provide a range of support across North East London, including complex case management and joint work with and consultation to numerous partner agencies such as other areas of the ELFT Forensic Service, criminal justice partners and Community Learning Disability Services, and providing a substantial programme of training. The team will also support gatekeeping of admissions to the inpatient service at John Howard Centre Medium Secure Unit and offer inreach to inpatients on the unit who are approaching discharge.

A strengths-based approach will underpin work with service users and carers so that their individual assets can be optimised and positive life choices and opportunities can be enabled in partnership with individuals and the services around them.

The Speech and Language Therapy position will join the community team but also be part of the inpatient SaLT team at John Howard Centre for Forensic Mental Health. The forensic SaLT team are a growing and dynamic team of therapists. The successful candidate will have access to excellent CPD opportunities and high quality clinical supervision

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the assessment, differential diagnosis, development and implementation of specialist treatment plans for a caseload of adults with learning disabilities in a forensic setting.

2. To continually develop and evaluate clinical practices and achieve goals set for personal and professional development.

To identify, plan, deliver and evaluate specialist training.
  • To provide specialist clinical communication support to other members of the clinical team, students and volunteers.


  • To work with wider clinical team to plan and facilitate provision of therapeutic groups on the ward.


  • To be involved in clinical governance / audit projects within the local service.


  • To independently manage and prioritise a specialist caseload of adults with learning disabilities and communication and / or dysphagia difficulties.


  • To maintain appropriate records in line with Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists guidelines.


  • Supervisory Responsibilities


  • To explain role of Speech and Language Therapists to visitors, students, volunteers and other professionals.


  • To provide student placements where appropriate.


  • To participate in the support of students from other professional groups as appropriate.


  • To be responsible for the planning and delivery of core and specialist training on a range of subjects relating to Adults with Learning Disabilities.

    Person Specification Education and Training Essential
    • oBSc in Speech and Language Therapy
    • oRegistration with HCPC
    • oMembership of RCSLT
    Desirable
    • oPost Basic Dysphagia qualification
    • oRecognised qualifications in specialist areas relevant to the role
    • oClinical Supervisory Skills training.
    • oQuality improvement training
    Experience Essential
    • o2 years post-qualification experience as a SaLT
    • oSubstantial experience working within MDT teams
    Desirable
    • oPost qualification experience working with learning disabilities / ASD / mental health
    • oParticipation in service / systems development
    • oSupervision experience
    • oExperience in clinical governance activities
