Bedford Psychiatric service are looking to recruit new nurses to join our team working within the general hospital setting. Assessments, planning of care and the coordination of this care to other services are core aspects of the team, and you would be supported to improve and develop in all aspects of your nursing skill set, alongside developing your skills based on your own career ambitions. You would be meeting with people in A&E and ward settings and working on a rota that includes some nights and weekends as the service is 24/7.

Main duties of the job

1. Be responsible for the full mental health assessment of care needs of patients presenting with a wide variety of clinical conditions within the Emergency Department and the acute hospital.

2. Provide a comprehensive consultation-liaison service to the other medical teams and individual clinicians, particularly assisting them develop plans of care and make complex decisions in cases where patients over the age of 18 years are exhibiting complex psychosocial needs and/or challenging behaviours.

3.Take an active role in contributing to meeting the PLS key performance indicators as specified in the service specification.

4.Be required to teach other nursing and non-nursing staff, both in formal and informal settings including pre-registration students.

5. Assist in maintaining the PLS Team's ward-based patient caseload, providing reviews and up-dates to the Consultant Psychiatrist and providing a broad range of clinical interventions as appropriate.

6. Be responsible for specific clinical projects and undertake all necessary work to complete these, including facilitating meetings, liaising and/or negotiating with other staff.

7. Be expected to participate fully in quality assurance initiatives, with particular emphasis on a 'patient first' approach.

8. Act as a role model in providing a service for people above the age of 18 years with mental health problems, for all staff within the acute hospital

Person Specification Education Essential
  • oRegistered Mental Health Nurse
  • oCurrent Professional Registration
  • oENB 998 or equivalent Mentoring certification
  • oEvidence of continual professional development
Desirable
  • oRecognised post graduate qualifications in a specialist area of adult or older adult mental health
Experience Essential
  • oPost qualification experience in the field of adult and/or older adult
  • oPrevious experience at working autonomously
  • oExperience of working in a multidisciplinary mental health team
  • oExperience of working in a multi-cultural environment and of ensuring that nursing practice is culturally sensitive
  • oDemonstrable experience of assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programs of care, particularly in an acute care or older adult community setting
  • oEssential and demonstrable experience of writing concise and clear clinical reports
Knowledge and Skills Essential
  • oDemonstrate an understanding of how to promote the rights, responsibilities and recovery of adults and/or older adults with mental health problems
  • oDemonstrate understanding of the key issues and priorities relating to the provision of liaison mental health services in an acute hospital for aged 18 years and over
  • oDemonstrate an understanding of the expectations, pressures and demands of acute hospital wards.
  • oDemonstrate a clear understanding of current legislation and policy pertaining to the provision of mental health services in all settings including the Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act 2005, NHS and Community Care Act 1990, Human Rights Act 1998
  • oDemonstrate a thorough knowledge, expertise and practical experience of a full range of therapeutic nursing skills and approaches to people with mental health problems aged 18 years and above
  • oDemonstrate a thorough knowledge, understanding and practical experience of risk assessment and risk management
  • oDemonstrate an awareness and understanding of child and adult protection issues
  • oDemonstrate a clear understanding of clinical governance and the provision of evidenced based care
  • oDemonstrate a clear understanding and commitment to implementing the Equal Opportunities policy
  • oDemonstrate an understanding of research and audit
