The Trust is pleased to offer this permanent Band 8a Clinical Psychology role. The post is based within our specialist inpatient provision for people with learning disabiities, which works closely with the Learning Disability Intensive Support Service (LDISS) and complements the work of our four Community Learning Disability Teams (CLDTs).

It is an exciting time to join our multi-disciplinary team as we look to review and transform the way in which we provide services to those in most need of support and we are therefore seeking enthusiastic candidates who can contribute positively and flexibly to the transformation agenda. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong commitment to the principles of person-centred service delivery, excellent professional and clinical skills in relation to the challenges presented by and for this client group, and experience of work within the NHS.

Main duties of the job

The role requires the delivery of an applied psychology model that promotes and supports effective psychological outcomes through direct and indirect models of working. Therefore consultation, teaching and training will form an essential component of the post alongside direct clinical work. The successful candidate will have strong skill sets in relation to working with people with Learning Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), histories of trauma, and mental-health issues, and will be highly experienced in working within a Positive Behaviour Support model

The successful candidate will join a strong and welcoming Learning Disabilities Service that has a strong emphasis on multi-disciplinary working. There are 8 other qualified Psychologists working within the Learning Disability Service in Gloucestershire. Working relationships are excellent and you will be well supported. A broad range of psychological models are drawn upon and valued. Clinicians are encouraged to develop areas of special interest and we have a good track record of supporting Continuing Professional Development. We have close links with the Doctorate Training Course at Bath University and regularly support a number of Trainee placements. There are regular meetings of Psychologists across teams to consider professional issues, service innovation and joint working initiatives.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Post Graduate Doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology, as accredited by the B.P.S (or equivalent level health- relevant Applied Psychology training, as accredited by the B.P.S
  • Registered as Practitioner Psychologist with the HCPC
  • noneCompetence in breakaway techniques (and restraint as necessary) established and maintained via Trust Positive Response Training or similar.
  • Experience of maintaining working relationships and a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical aggression
  • Evidence of maintaining effective communication when there are barriers to understanding and in circumstances where hostility, manipulation, conflict, and antagonism are present.
  • Proficient in the manipulation of complex Psychological test equipment for use in formal testing situations
  • Evidence in application of Psychological knowledge to improve and develop practice in work to date
  • Proficient in conducting functional analyses and utilising the information gained from such assessments to develop detailed formulations and support plans
  • Good working knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support models and interventions
  • Broad range of post-qualification experience, preferably working at a highly specialist level in an increasingly autonomous capacity
  • Experience of conducting supervision and appraisals and monitoring performance of staff
  • Care co-ordination or equivalent role with people with complex psychological needs
  • Examples of contributing to service development initiatives
  • Emotional robustness to frequently work with the intense distress of others.
  • Ability to adapt style and/or assessment and intervention strategies to meet the challenges of complex clients / situations
  • Ability to attend and participate in all mandatory and statutory training trust vehicles where required)
  • Competence in breakaway techniques (and restraint as necessary) established and maintained via Trust Positive Response Training or similar.
