Come to Southampton!

Join Southampton's Multi Agency CAMHS service, Building Resilience and Strength (BRS), and be part of a wider multi agency and disciplinary team delivering high quality crisis and intensive intervention service to some of our most vulnerable children and young people. The role is full time, with a majority weighted towards direct clinical delivery but with some protected time teaching as part of our award winning teaching team. You will also be joining with a team of 5 other Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists working across the Solent NHS CAMHS portfolio in a forward looking, progressive service.

The Building Resilience and Strength Service (BRS); is a joint crisis and intensive therapeutic intervention service -- jointly commissioned and delivered between Southampton Local Authority and Solent NHS Trust. The service supports the most vulnerable children and young people across the city. Specialist CAMHS and BRS work very closely together on the most complex and high-risk cases in order to provide more intensive support and work to prevent both hospital admission and family breakdown. The BRS also plays a large role in meeting the mental health needs of children and young people looked after, in partnership with our other CAMH Services. BRS is the Southampton base from which FCAMHS input is provided on behalf of the Hants & IoW FCAMHS Team. You will be coming into a post which has been made possible through new investment.

Main duties of the job

We have community services in children's and adult's physical and mental health including a cluster of children's mental health teams. We have close and collaborative relationships with commissioners, the Local Authority, Community Paediatric Services, Acute Paediatric and ED services as well as the in-house Paediatric Liaison team in University Hospitals Southampton (UHS). We offer exciting and innovative services including the SpCAMHS team, BRS, the Autism assessment Pathway, MHSTs, and the newly started CAMHS Inreach Team to work within the emergency department and across the Paediatric wards at UHS.

CAMHS are well advanced on their transformation journey and work closely with commissioners to secure additional investment where required. The service has a multidisciplinary senior leadership team which are dedicated to offering a high-quality service. We have clear pathways in the service, including our MDT assessments and a range of evidence- based interventions. We are proud of our DBT programme we have established for children and young people with significant risk relating to mental health difficulties and emotional dysregulation. As a system, we have developed clear transition pathways and governance around these. We have also formed close partnerships with third sector partners (e.g. No Limits, Yellow Door) within the team and on the patient pathway. The results of our last CQC inspection in 2019 was overall good with outstanding for caring.

Job description Job responsibilities

Solent NHS Trust is the main provider of children's community services to the cities of Portsmouth and Southampton and to parts of Hampshire. It is also the main provider of mental health services to people living in Portsmouth.

Southampton CAMH Services sit within the Children & Families Service Line of the Trust, managed by a Clinical Director and a Senior Leadership Team. It provides a comprehensive service for children and young people up to the age of 18 years in line with the NHS England directives and Southampton CCG, National Service Framework and the Government whitepaper for people with Learning difficulties 'Valuing People' and works in an increasingly integrated way with the other Trust providers of children's and mental health services as well as partner agencies.

The clinical and administrative base for the post is at the BRS building. The base for the medical education responsibility in the role is the Horizon building, the main clinical base of Southampton's Specialist CAMHS Team. The bases are approx. 1.5 miles from each other.

The BRS is one of four Solent CAMH Services in Southampton and is highly unique in its multi-agency set up. It is Southampton's crisis intervention service for the City's most vulnerable children and young people who present with highly complex needs and associated risks, including risk to others. Alongside more focused crisis intervention the service delivers specialist therapeutic services for children, young people and their families who require more longer term, intensive pieces of work. SpCAMHS, BRS and our Inreach CAMHS Liaison Team work very closely together with the most complex and high risk children and young people in order to provide more intensive support. The BRS is also the clinical base from which the Hampshire and IOW Forensic CAMHS Team provides its Forensic CAMHS input for Southampton.

Southampton CAMH Services are in the process of significant transformation including the recent creation of a Single Point of Access working jointly with colleagues from local third sector organisations. This will improve the ability of patients to access the appropriate service in a more timely fashion. We are currently transforming our offer of early intervention within CAMHS and developing pathways for patients to have a clearer journey through the service. We have been working with local commissioners and other agencies city wide to enhance the ADHD pathway for children and young people, to allow early intervention outside CAMHS and streamlined assessment pathways within CAMHS. In addition to the transformation within CAMHS, we are working alongside commissioners to develop Mental Health in School Teams with full mobilisation well underway for 2022.

Service transformation has been predominantly influenced by close collaboration with commissioning colleagues from Southampton City CCG; within the framework of national strategic drivers and funding changes through Future in Mind and the Five Years Forward View. The transformation across the services has involved the creation of an MDT leadership structure within the team, including the recent appointment of a consultant nurse and consultant clinical psychologist.

Southampton CAMHS is especially recognised as a centre for training and education with the lead role in undergraduate medical education in Psychiatry and similarly for post-graduate specialist training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The recent (2015) appointment within the service of a senior CAMHS Medical academic (Professor and Honorary Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) jointly with the Faculty of Medicine and the School of Psychology (Southampton University); has further enhanced the academic and research reputation of the service.

This vacancy has arisen due to the increased investment in our BRS Service as it transforms into a service offering extended hours crisis intervention alongside highly specialist therapeutic intervention. The successful applicant will join a relatively well provisioned multi-disciplinary service with other consultant colleagues already in post. The transformation process has also provided the service with excellent further development opportunities.
