The Trust is seeking a Speciality doctor to join the Rehabilitation Psychiatry service. The East Kent post is a newly created post to provide regular medical input into the Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation Teams in East Kent

This is a community hospital based post and the post holder will work with one consultant. The office base is currently at Laurel House in Canterbury. The administration team is based in The Beacon, Thanet, Ramsgate. The post holder should have the ability to travel to all locations of the Trust in order to be able to undertake their duties. The post holder will have to travel to see patients and to other places for work and training purposes. All expenses will be reimbursed according to national guidelines and trust policy.

These are 10 PA posts however the Trust would welcome a discussion with individuals looking for a more flexible working pattern to support work-life balance.

Applicants must have full registration with the GMC including licence to practice.

The Trust has now moved to a position where MHA Section 12(2) Approval holders are expected to contribute to a middle-tier non-residential on call rota attracting an extra 1PA and 2% (of a 10 PA salary) pro-rata for part time. Specialty doctors who do not hold Section 12 (2) Approval are expected to work towards this and will be supported to do so.

About the Care Group/Role

The post holder will be providing 8.5 PA clinical sessions to the Liaison Psychiatry Service and 1.5 PA Supporting Professional Activities. The Liaison Psychiatry Service serves the William Harvey Hospital under East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust. The service's current working hours are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This post holder will work with patients referred aged 18 or over, without upper age limit.

The successful applicant will be required to have enhanced clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Job description Job responsibilities

  • The post holder will be the units doctor, assessing mental and physical health and managing these, with the patients and the teams. You will be liaising with other professionals from general practice, the acute trusts, social services, housing, benefits and rarely the police in carrying out your duties. You will be responsible for requesting investigations, making referrals to other specialists and following through with the support of the admin team. You will be visiting both The Grove and Rivendell units each week.

    You will also conduct assessments of referrals jointly with another team member. You will be central to helping patients (and their carers) understand their condition and its management, assessing their progress, promoting their physical and mental health, monitoring their physical health including as required for their medication, recording your work in patients records, and contributing to multi-professional care review meetings. You will be updating the Rehabilitation consultant on the progress of patients and raising any concerns to have advisory discussions with the consultant. For the small minority of patients detained under the mental health act you will compile reports and summaries for Tribunals and Managers meetings. You may also attend these meetings, or learn to participate under consultant supervision. Support will also be given for you to acquire Section 12 approval under the Mental Health Act 1983You will have the opportunity to be part of the unit Business Meeting which deals with how the ward is run.

    In the East Kent Service the post-holder will work with the trainees who act as the unit doctors for the three units.

    You will have the opportunity to supervise trainees and teach medical students, as well as to offer teaching to other staff, patients and carers.

    You will be encouraged to develop professionally, as informed by the GMCs Good Medical Practice and by your own and the trusts goals. Two of your ten PAs will be devoted to teaching, training, CPD and quality improvement this, including activities such as research, audit, and quality-improvement projects.

  • Person Specification Qualifications Essential
    • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
    • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
    • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
    • Specialist knowledge and experience in old age psychiatry
    • Additional clinical qualifications
    Eligibility Essential
    • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
    • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
    • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
    • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
    Transport Essential
    • TRANSPORTHolds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative
    Clinical Skills Essential
    • Excellent knowledge in specialty
    • Psychiatry within the last 5 years
    • Completed minimum of three years full-time training in psychiatry
    • Clinical expertise in the assessment and Management of risk
    • Good working knowledge of the interface between the MCA and MHA
    • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
    • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
    • Endorsement in Old Age Psychiatry from Royal College of Psychiatrists
    • Experience of working with Older Adults and skills in cognitive assessment
    • Experience in working in other specialities

    • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
    • Participated in continuous professional development
    • Participated in research or service evaluation
    • Able to use and appraise clinical evidence
