We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic band 5 to join our team here on Davenport Ward. Davenport Ward is a 20 bedded all female ward to support patients over 65 years old who are experiencing a relapse in their functional mental health problem.

Main duties of the job

  • Regularly co-ordinate the efficient and effective running of the unit and to make some autonomous decisions in the absence of the Unit Manager and Charge Nurses.
  • Work in an environment, which at times may be challenging and unpredictable.
  • To ensure that the patient and their carers are at the centre of the care provided on Davenport Ward.
  • - Work as part of a MDT team and demonstrate effective team working and communication skills.

    - Act as a named nurse for patients and support them throughout their admission until discharge.

    - To complete relevant assessments with patients based on evidence based practise.

    - To act as a role model to students and junior staff. To provide supervision to junior staff.

    Job description Job responsibilities

    The successful candidate will possess excellent communication skills and work effectively in a Band 5 role, will welcome a challenge and be committed to care of the older people with mental health needs. You will be responsible for the assessment of needs, planning, implementation and evaluation of care of clients admitted to the ward. You will supervise junior staff, ensuring highest standards of nursing care are delivered in accordance with trust policies and procedures, along with The Mental Heath Act and all other legislation.

    Person Specification Education / Qualifications Essential
    • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN)
    Desirable
    • Evidence of post qualification training and education with older people who have mental health problems
    Experience Essential
    • Experience as a Student Nurse working with older people who have mental health problems
    Desirable
    • Previous experience working with older adults who have mental health problems preferably in an in-patient setting
    Knowledge Essential
    • A detailed knowledge of mental health conditions and how they impact upon the function of the individual.
    • Clinical and theoretical knowledge of the care of older people with mental illness.
    Desirable
    • Awareness of the holistic needs of older people with mental health problems.
    • For example the impact of physical health changes on mental health.
    Skills and Abilities Essential
    • Ability to demonstrate clinical expertise in the assessment, treatment and intervention implementation and evaluation of patient care.
    • Effective communication skills
    • Positive attitude and values when working with older people
    Desirable
    • Evidence of managing changes and conflict.
    • The ability to engage with patients, to help maintain skills.
    Work Related Circumstances Essential
    • Ability to be flexible and responsive to change in clinical need
    • The post is psychologically, emotionally and physically demanding, therefore post holder need to demonstrate effective stress management.
    • Flexible approach
    • Use of a car or access to a means of mobility to travel across the Trust footprint in line with service needs
    • Willing to carry out all duties and responsibilities of the post in accordance with the Trust's Equal Opportunities and Equality and Diversity policies
    • Appointments to regulated and controlled activities require an enhanced DBS disclosure
