Job Details

We are excited to be able to offer four trainee psychological therapist posts as part of the development of the Norfolk and Waveney At-Risk Mental States (ARMS) service. This is a newly funded service that is in the initial setup and development phase.

The ARMS service will sit under the Norfolk and Waveney Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) service. This service is made up of four teams, with bases in Norwich (North and South teams), Great Yarmouth and Waveney (East team) and King's Lynn (West team). The ARMS service will follow the same model and successful candidates will have a core base in one of these teams (location to be discussed and agreed with interested candidates during the recruitment process). As well as working clinically, successful candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to ARMS service development.

During and following training, successful candidates will work across the Norfolk and Waveney EIP and ARMS services in therapy roles. This means that there will be opportunity to work clinically with people with ARMS, but also people with first episode psychosis (FEP). The Norfolk and Waveney EIP service uses an 'across service' therapy model where therapists offer clinical input to various teams, depending on service need. In addition to having a core clinical base, successful candidates will be expected to support this model where required.

Main duties of the job

Successful applicants will provide psychological assessment and treatment for people with ARMS and FEP and their families/carers. Health Education England (HEE) are currently commissioning post-graduate training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis and Bipolar (CBT PB) and the successful candidates will access a two-year (PGDip) training programme at University College London (UCL) from January 2023. Information about this course is attached. Behavioural Family Therapy (BFT) training will also be offered in house.

About us

Both full-time and part-time hours will be considered. However, due to the nature of the training and service need, successful candidates will be expected to work at least 30 hours per week. The total number of hours offered will also be dependent on the recruitment process and service funding and need. The total contracted hours will be discussed and agreed with interested candidates during recruitment.

Norfolk and Waveney EIP has undergone significant expansion over the last six years following funding from NHS England for the Access and Waiting Time Standard. The service are currently working towards national accreditation with the Royal College of Psychiatrists and hope to be a flagship service for the Trust. Staff retention in the service is excellent and the core staff group includes several roles, including administration assistants, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, vocational workers, support workers and peer support workers.

The Norfolk and Waveney EIP service currently has a Principal Clinical Psychologist, three Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologists, six psychological therapists and four assistant psychologists. In addition to the advertised posts, the development of the ARMS service will see an increase in psychological resource, including an additional Assistant Psychologist and an additional Principal Clinical Psychologist.

Band 7 psychological therapist posts will be offered to those who successfully complete the CBT PB training and meet the service preceptorship targets.

On completion of training, job planning will be completed with successful candidates to ensure that they work safely and competently in line with professional guidelines. Regular individual and peer supervision and opportunities for Continued Professional Development (CPD) will be provided.

Diane Hull - NSNHSFT

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is the main provider of specialist mental health services for the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, serving a population of 1.6 million people. We are a large organisation covering a wide geographical area divided into ‘Care Groups'. There are also Care Groups supporting children, family and young people’s services, and specialist services, including Forensic mental health services.

Each Care Group has its own Leadership team, with the aim of supporting clinically led decision making locally, to support the needs of people accessing services.

We have inpatient facilities across both counties with smaller bases in rural locations. Many of the Trust’s services are offered in the community, enabling people accessing services to receive the support they need in an environment familiar to them.

At NSFT we believe in recovery and wellbeing, and understand the importance of good physical health, maintaining relationships and achieving a balance between treatments and continuing an active life.

The people in our care, families and carers are at the centre of all aspects of all we do and are vital in helping shape and support our service strategy. Our strategy supports and enables people with mental health problems to live a fulfilling life and make their personal recovery journey.

Norfolk and Suffolk, in the East of England are some of the safest places to live in the UK, with low crime rates making it a community to be proud of. Housing prices are frequently cited as a reason to move here, as you get an incredible amount for your money compared with other major UK cities.
